Hey, Sweater Weather—The 5 Cozy Cardigans I’m Wearing All Season Long

Soft and stylish.

I spend the entire summer counting down the days until fall arrives and the hot, humid weather finally subsides. Once the temperature drops below 70 degrees, I officially consider it sweater season—aka the best time of year. And while cool-weather clothing is my absolute favorite, I’m not the most experimental with my style; I tend to stick to basics, like well-fitting jeans, chic black boots, and button down shirts I can wear on repeat. Where I do like to experiment with color and texture is in the sweater category. There are so many cute cardigans that can be styled on their own or as part of a layered look, all while being cozy and stylish. After years of trying to find the cardigans I’m genuinely excited to wear over and over again, I’ve landed on these five.

American Vintage offers a wide range of high-quality knitwear, but the Damsville Cardigan is my favorite. It’s a wool and polyamide blend, but it’s not at all itchy. The fabric feels smooth and soft on the skin. It’s not too thick or heavy, making it excellent for layering; it fits beautifully under a winter coat without becoming too bulky. The classic, slightly boxy silhouette is incredibly versatile; I love pairing it with a white tank top, jeans, and sneakers for a casual daytime look, but it also looks great with black jeans and heeled boots for a night out.

Those looking for a cable-knit cardi will love this one from J.Crew. It’s a semi-structured sweater that looks super polished when worn fully buttoned, and a bit more relaxed when worn open for a layered look. It’s chic, non-itchy, and pretty well-priced for a 100% merino wool cardigan. It comes in ivory and black, which is pretty standard, but is also available in powder blue and peridot, offering fun, punchy options for those looking to add a pop of color to their outfit.

If you’re willing to splurge on a staple sweater you’ll have for years, I highly recommend this one from Naked Cashmere. To say it’s soft would be an understatement—the brushed cashmere feels like wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket, though it’s not too thick or hot. The quality of the cashmere is truly unmatched. It’s a great piece to take from fall into winter, since it’s easy to layer, and I love how easily it can be dressed up or down.

This popular cardigan from American Vintage comes in every color you could imagine. Between the vibrant pink I’m sporting and other fun hues like tangerine and royal blue, and classic neutrals like black, cream, and gray, there’s a shade (or several) everyone will love. My favorite way to wear it is completely buttoned up over a white T-shirt; I find the buttons look cute and dainty, and layering helps mitigate some of the itchiness while adding a casual flair. If you’re sensitive to wool or alpaca, like me, you might find it a bit itchy, but layering it over a T-shirt helps significantly.
