We Found the Best Leather Jackets of the Season—From Classic Motos to Bombers
From oversized bombers to chic motorcycle jackets.

Byrdie
Leather jackets are undeniably cool and eye-catching, but they’re a basic at the same time—a beautiful paradox of outerwear. They also can’t all be painted with the same brush: You have your classic motos and bombers, but there are more inventive designs too, like ’70s-inspired longlines and ’90s-inspired romantic rounded edges.
“Leather jackets are always a fall favorite, but what feels fresh this season is how they are being styled,” says celebrity stylist Erin Walsh. “We’re seeing them in so many ways, like pairing them with dressier pieces, balancing oversized fits with feminine details, or mixing textures to make the look feel more intentional.”
To help you shop for your perfect leather jacket, Byrdie editors tested and reviewed a wide range of genuine and vegan leather jackets that run the gamut in terms of pricing and design, from the likes of Quince, Abercrombie, Banana Republic, and Aritzia. Below, we dive deep into which ones were our ultimate favorites—based on price, comfort, style, quality, versatility, and durability. We’re sure you’ll find something you love.

Best Overall
Quince Bomber Jacket

Materials: Leather | Size Range: XS-XL | Colors: Distressed brown, distressed black, true black
Quince is such a gold mine for high-quality pieces at fair prices, and this leather jacket—which is made from 100% sheep leather—is exhibits A, B, and C. Available in distressed brown or black and true black, it’s incredibly elegant for the office while still being low-key enough for brunch. Its medium-weight, slightly stiffer leather means that it can be dressed up easily and won’t become schlubby over time—as we can attest having owned it for a year. Design elements like the wide collar and strategically positioned brushed silver hardware take this oversized bomber to the next level.

Alyssa Kaplan, editor: “This jacket is excellent, especially for the price point. It’s real leather that feels pretty durable and keeps its shape. I like this oversized style with casual jeans and sneakers or over a mini dress with boots.”
Best Suede
Abercrombie Suede Jacket

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester | Size Range: XXS-XL | Colors: 9
Suede can be a delicate fabric to wear, so we prefer opting for vegan suede, like this one from Abercrombie. The vegan suede option, available in dark brown, light brown, and olive green, adds some welcome texture to a classic transitional outfit, while the smooth leather option brings an edge while still being super easy to wear. Both are buttery soft by all accounts. We love that this jacket has minimal seams and hardware, giving it a more streamlined look than, say, a biker jacket. That also means you can get away with wearing this number in a whole bunch of different settings—which, of course, we’ve been doing.

Ali Webb, associate style editor: “I got this leather jacket at the start of fall, and it’s been an ideal transitional piece. The burgundy color has allowed me to subtly switch it up from my collection of mostly black jackets, and the slim fit and buttery soft texture have made it an instant go-to for everyday wear. It doesn’t have a smell, and it fits incredibly comfortably.”
Best Oversized
Free People Vegan Bomber

Materials: Vegan leather | Size Range: XS-XL | Colors: Brown sugar, black
We feel like we gain about 100 cool points every time we wear this grungy, oversized bomber jacket. A big selling point for this one is that you won’t have to relegate it to the depths of your closet once the temps drop: It’s actually impressively warm and can keep being part of your winter rotation (not to mention it’s large enough to fit a chunky sweater under it, should you need it). Choose from classic black for easy styling or dappled brown for a ’70s biker-bar feel.

Maddie Barber, writer: “I gravitate towards oversized jackets, sweaters, pants, etc., so I love the oversized fit of this Free People jacket. It feels grungy and cool, and it makes even the simplest casual outfits I’ve been wearing feel more elevated. Plus, it’s actually warm thanks to its plush lining, but doesn’t feel too heavy (so you won’t overheat or get sweaty).”
Best Cropped
By Anthropologie Crop Jacket

Materials: Viscose, polyurethane | Size Range: XXS-XL | Colors: Cool olive
Leather jackets can often feel stiff and restrictive—not this Anthropologie one. The cropped silhouette fits beautifully without limiting our movements. The greenish gray works great as a neutral while still being a little more interesting than plain black, and the studs add that little je ne sais quoi that keeps us coming back to it. Also, faux leather means this jacket is on the more affordable side, and it had zero weird smell when we first got it as well as looking identical to genuine leather.

Anna Traver, writer: “The detailing really makes all the difference with this leather jacket. I love the studs and hardware, and the color could be considered a neutral, making it easy to pair with a wide variety of colors and outfits. It’s super comfortable; I didn’t feel restricted at all.”
Best Brown
Babaton Bomber

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester, cupro, elastane | Size Range: 2XS-XL | Colors: Chocolatier brown, rich mocha brown, black, rich maroon
Consider this article a campaign to change your mind about faux leather, because this Aritzia bomber jacket is yet another one whose synthetic leather looks and feels amazing. The fabric on this one is actually super flowy and flexible—as well as coming with stretchy detailing around the hem—so it’s incredibly comfortable as well as looking so good. The slightly shorter design makes it really lovely over both casual jeans and feminine dresses. Brown leather is definitely having a moment, and this one comes in two different ones to get the tone just right.

Dominique Hobdy, senior editor: “I usually really don’t appreciate faux leather, but this jacket singlehandedly changed my mind about what it can look and feel like. I’ve styled this so many ways, from flowy, silk dresses to add a bit of edge to dainty looks to barrel jeans and sneakers for a more casual moment.”
Best Long
& Other Stories Leather Jacket

Materials: Leather, rayon | Size Range: 0-14 | Colors: Black croco
While we do love a classic moto or bomber jacket, there’s something deeply cool about a straight-cut long leather jacket—a ’70s rock chick in London vibe, if you will. But this isn’t just a straight-cut long leather jacket: It also has a croc texture, large pocket details, and a tidy row of big buttons down the middle in place of the traditional metal zipper. It’s definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum, but we find it so worth it even just based on how many ways we can wear it. This is a long-term investment.

Maddie Barber, writer: “I love this leather jacket for its ability to make a regular pairing of jeans and a white shirt look significantly more polished, thanks to its croc texture, longer length, and body-skimming fit. It’s made from genuine leather, so it doesn’t have that odd plasticky scent and feels smooth to the touch. I love how I can button it up and have the jacket function more as an elevated shirt and be the star of my outfit, or I can leave it unbuttoned and layer like I would with any other jacket in my closet.”
Best Motorcycle Jacket
Quince Motorcycle Jacket

Materials: Sheep leather | Size Range: XS-XL | Colors: True black/brass hardware, true black, dark cognac brown, cognac, distressed brown, burnt umber
Honestly, $200 for a high-quality 100% sheep leather jacket is almost too good to be true—especially when you consider how many brands sell faux leather for the same price. But that’s Quince for you. This is the ultimate moto jacket, complete with all the expected design features, like the classic collar and the strategically placed hardware (plus a belt!). It’s made from soft leather that still keeps you warm and comes in a great range of colors. If you must know, we’re partial to the true black and the cognac brown.

Emily Cieslak, associate editor: “The leather is soft and supple while having enough weight to actually keep you warm. As a petite person, I appreciate how the jacket is fitted, hitting me right at the waist, and the sleeves aren’t too long. Yet it’s still big enough to layer sweaters underneath and comfortably move around. The hardware is great, and I love how there are several zipped pockets that are large enough to hold my keys, cards, and lip gloss.”
Best Budget
Garage Jacket

Materials: Polyurethane (faux leather) | Size Range: XXS-XL | Colors: Dark mocha brown, washed black
We love everything about a leather jacket—except the price. Enter faux leather, which can sometimes have disadvantages such as a plasticky feel or an initial smell, but means anyone can own a “leather” jacket without breaking the bank. But this Garage worker jacket has much more going for it than just its price tag. Having tested it over a month, we’ve been able to note just how versatile it is as the top layer in our daily outfits, plus we’re truly obsessed with the deep brown color. The fit is great too, falling in that sweet spot between cropped and oversized.

Anna Traver, writer: “This is definitely my favorite jacket I own at the moment. It fits me perfectly. Oversized doesn’t always look the best on me, so I like how this one is more fitted without feeling restricting or stuffy at all. I’m able to easily move around in it, but it doesn’t feel like I’m swimming in it. “
Best Bomber
Abercrombie Leather Bomber

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester | Size Range: XXS-XL | Colors: Black
We’re so glad Abercrombie is having a renaissance, because just look at this bomber! This is a real classic design, in simple black or brown and puffy in the body and the sleeves (that’s why it’s called a “bubble hem”). It may be made from vegan leather, but it still has a lovely soft feel and is really comfortable to wear, too. It’s actually really warm as well, which is handy for a piece that’s so perfect for the transition seasons.

Anna Traver, writer: “This is the perfect fall jacket to spice up your outfits. It keeps me warm on days when it’s on the chilly side, and I always get compliments when I wear it.”
Best Petite
Petite Studio NYC Leather Jacket

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester, spandex, viscose | Size Range: XXS-L | Colors: Black
For petite frames, it’s not always easy to find an oversized jacket that doesn’t swallow us up. That’s why we think it’s a good idea to shop at brands that specifically cater to petites like the aptly named Petite Studio. This jacket is even more versatile than some of the other picks on our list because it features a removable, contrast brown shearling collar. Plus, it has brown suede detailing on the sleeves which make it anything but basic. We love that, despite being faux leather, this jacket doesn’t have a weird, gummy texture that might usually put us off—it actually looks and feels like real leather.

Emily Cieslak, associate editor: “I usually hate fake leather, but I have to say the quality of this faux leather jacket is impressive enough to make me look past it. The material isn’t gummy or noticeably fake, and there’s a nice satin lining which adds a luxurious touch. Specifically designed for petites, this jacket provides that oversized look that’s actually flattering on my short frame.”
Best Blazer
Banana Republic ’90s Leather Blazer

Materials: Lambskin leather, twill | Size Range: 0-12 | Colors: Espresso brown
It’s giving Julia Roberts in Notting Hill. Jennifer Aniston in early Friends. Holly Marie Combs in Charmed. And what comes back stronger than a ’90s trend, bar Taylor Swift herself? Exactly. Made from butter-soft lambskin leather, this espresso-colored blazer has a little sheen to it that adds to its allure. We also love the soft, rounded edges, something you don’t often see in a leather jacket and which makes it very romantic. To note, this is a lighter-weight jacket, which is especially appropriate for the in-between seasons.

Shannon Stubbs, writer: “It’s not as heavy or as warm as standard leather jackets, but I think it’s a great piece for transitional weather, like the spring or fall. I like that I can wear it with a shirt underneath or by itself, creating two different looks. It has a slightly weathered appearance, which I think makes it look vintage or thrifted. I love the marbling on the buttons and the color, which is a super dark brown instead of black.”
Best Red
Lioness Bomber Jacket

Materials: Polyurethane, polyester | Size Range: XXS-XXL | Colors: Crimson + many more
This Lioness bomber jacket is meant to be seen. It’s puffy, large, and loud, and if you opt for the red colorway on top of everything, you’d better be comfortable in the spotlight. The structured detailing and contrast seams beautifully add to the whole look and, frankly, we’re surprised it doesn’t cost more than it does given how much of a difference it can make to any outfit. By the way, if you love the look of this jacket, but crimson is just that little step too far for your comfort, it’s also available in plenty of more discreet neutrals.

Lauren Pardee, senior editor: “I love this jacket because it makes a statement and styles a look without compromising on comfort and warmth. It’s the perfect red color and has these funky side seam pockets that add dimension. The white stitching and ribbed cuffs and hem are fun details, too. I’ve worn this jacket through multiple seasons—I’ve dressed it up with a fun mini dress and also rocked it with a tracksuit—it’s always a hit.”
What to Look for in a Leather Jacket
- Materials: Whether you choose fake or real leather comes down to your budget and preferences. Faux leather tends to be more affordable, but not everyone loves the way it looks or feels (although brands have been getting better at making realistic fake leather). Either way, it’s the details that deem its quality. “Real leather should feel supple, not stiff, with stitching that’s even and seams that lie flat. A well-made jacket molds to your shape over time, developing character and softness rather than losing structure,” says stylist Ana Brillembourg. “For those choosing faux leather, focus on texture and construction. Look for pieces with a natural matte finish rather than high gloss, with solid lining and durable hardware.”
- Silhouette: The beauty of leather jackets is that they come in a range of silhouettes, from the classic moto jacket to to longline blazers to oversized bombers. “Leather jackets this season are redefining modern ease,” says Brillembourg. “Oversized bomber and boxy silhouettes are taking the lead, offering that perfect blend of structure and softness.”
- Color: While a black leather jacket is timeless, this is the year to experiment with other shades. “With fall in full swing, I’ve loved seeing people opt into rich and unexpected colorways, like deep chocolate, olive, and even cherry red taking over from the classic black,” says Walsh. Brown leather is especially having a moment, as shown by celebrities like Taylor Swift. “Brown leather, especially in those rich caramel and chestnut suede tones, feels incredibly elevated this season,” says Brillembourg. “It brings warmth and texture that instantly refines any look.”
