Another pro tip is to be cautious with lower-karat gold—anything under 14K, to be exact. “That’s because it can still contain nickel or other alloys that may trigger a reaction,” she adds.
- Size/Weight: Yes, size and weight can contribute to irritation, according to the Matajs. “Larger, heavier earrings often pull on the lobes, which may cause discomfort, redness, or even tiny tears over time,” they tell Byrdie. “For sensitive ears—whether due to metal allergies or pressure sensitivity—we recommend lightweight styles like huggies, small hoops, and sleek studs that sit comfortably without tugging.” Hollow hoops are also a smart option.
