TL;DR

Tini Lux Hypoallergenic Large Rooftop Hoop Earrings are the best choice for sensitive ears, thanks to their use of implant-grade titanium, which is hypoallergenic and lightweight. We tested them—so we can say, yes, they meet our editorial standards. For a more budget-friendly option, try Just Ti 45mm Gold Titanium Gold Hoops, which are titanium and under $20, proving that earrings for sensitive ears don’t have to cost a fortune to look and feel good.

Like a piece in your closet that is well-made, never underestimate the power of something that well, isn’t. Many earrings are made from inexpensive materials, such as nickel or base metals with thin plating, which can irritate the ear lobes and cause swelling and itching.

If you’re like me and consistently find yourself dreaming of the moment when you can finally take off your earrings, you’ll benefit from wearing earrings that are specifically designed for sensitive ears. But labels can be confusing (What’s actually hypoallergenic? Which kind of gold is safest?), so we asked jewelry experts what to look for and then tested curated options from high-quality brands. Here are the best earrings for sensitive ears that kept their promise to be irritation-free.

Materials: Pure titanium base, titanium nitride PVD coating | Size: 25 mm

If you haven’t hopped on the Tini Lux train yet, now’s the time. The brand is a favorite among Byrdie staffers—Star Donaldson, Byrdie’s social media director, has ultrasensitive skin and swears by them. And that’s because they use unalloyed titanium and implant-grade titanium, both materials approved by our experts. I tried this pair firsthand and loved their lightweight feel, which still gave them an expensive appearance, all without tugging at my sensitive lobes.

As someone who used to—ahem—run on a strict clothing budget (especially when it came to accessories), I’ll admit: In college, if faced with the choice between a fast-fashion dupe or the real deal, I’d almost always go for the cheaper version. But these James Allen studs are a turning point. They’re proof I’ve grown up, and my ears are so much better for it. Now, I can sleep in my studs without waking up to red, irritated, or crusted lobes. I’ve worn these while running errands, while running miles, while running late. And the only thing I’ve noticed is how incredibly comfortable these are.

And that’s because this pair is equipped with crystal-clear clips that are nearly invisible once they’re on. Plus, they’re super flexible and glide from the bottom of the ear, gently opening to clip. Atrenda makes all of its jewelry with surgical-grade stainless steel, which is hypoallergenic, waterproof, tarnish-proof, scratch-resistant, and eco-friendly.

Best Huggie

Materials: Solid medical grade titanium, 18K gold PVD plating | Size: 12 mm

Titanium is one of the most biocompatible metals, which means it’s extremely unlikely to trigger allergic reactions. It doesn’t contain nickel (one of the most common culprits of red, itchy ears, according to Ally Mataj, jewelry designer and co-founder of Bonheur Jewelry), making it a safe choice for people with metal sensitivities. Her recommendation is to invest in earrings with high-quality, skin-safe materials, like these from Maison Miru. Dubbed the “OG Nap Earring,” these huggies are designed to be worn all day, every day. Thanks to the closed loop, they won’t get stuck on your hair or clothing while napping.

These petite huggies make an impact, featuring glistening pavé diamonds set in solid 14K gold, making them a safe and stylish choice for sensitive ears. The brand promises that its high-quality, nickel-free metal ensures comfortable, irritation-free wear. And so I wore these to dinner, paired with a Norma Kamali tube dress, and they added the perfect sparkle to dress up my outfit without going overboard. And they not only survived my night out without aching or itching, but they also passed the test of sleeping in them without inflaming my skin. The makeup I left on, however, was a different story.

Like the Maison Miru huggies, these studs are made of pure medical-grade titanium, meaning they’re hypoallergenic and won’t bother your ears. They’re a crystal bezel set stud earring, featuring a gold-colored titanium bezel polished to a mirror finish—that’s what gives them their shine. For those who are particular about their stud sizing, these come in 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm, each of which still boasts a pretty noticeable sparkle.

Materials: 40 mils micro-plated 14K yellow gold over .925 sterling silver | Size: 1.75 inches

This pair of ethereal drop earrings from Sophie Blake proved to me that even those with the most sensitive ears can have a stacked jewelry lineup. Jewelry designer Albina Mataj cautions being selective about earring size, as too heavy designs can irritate your lobes. Luckily, these feature a chain detail that is as light as a feather, so much so that I felt like I was wearing a stud instead of a beautiful, nature-inspired drop. The nickel-free design is made from micro-plated 14K yellow gold over sterling silver.

A chunky, polished stud that doesn’t tarnish? Count us in. We love the Bottega-esque look of these—and that they come at a much more forgiving price point. They’re a slippery, shiny teardrop earring that gives the illusion of a significant drop, without it feeling that way on the lobes. I especially loved that these are waterproof (Euro summer girls, rejoice—these can be paired with your crochet cover-up) and hypoallergenic.

Materials: 14K solid gold | Size: 2.4 inches

A lot of people with sensitive skin opt for solid gold jewelry, and all of Babygold’s designs are made from solid gold in Los Angeles. These thin hoops make a statement while remaining light in your ears, and the diamond cut helps the gold shimmer in the light. Thanks to the endless loop, you don’t have to worry about these earrings getting caught or scratching your neck, despite the larger size. Though they are pricier, they come with a lifetime guarantee.

What to Look for in Earrings for Sensitive Ears

  • Materials: Certain metals found in earrings can irritate or, in some cases, cause allergic reactions, says jewelry designer Emily Nunns. “The most common culprit is nickel, which is often used in low-quality costume jewelry, which is why so many people end up with sore or itchy ears after wearing it,” she says. If you have sensitive ears, always look for jewelry made from gold, platinum, or titanium. Another pro tip is to be cautious with lower-karat gold—anything under 14K, to be exact. “That’s because it can still contain nickel or other alloys that may trigger a reaction,” she adds.
  • Size/Weight: Yes, size and weight can contribute to irritation, according to the Matajs. “Larger, heavier earrings often pull on the lobes, which may cause discomfort, redness, or even tiny tears over time,” they tell Byrdie. “For sensitive ears—whether due to metal allergies or pressure sensitivity—we recommend lightweight styles like huggies, small hoops, and sleek studs that sit comfortably without tugging.” Hollow hoops are also a smart option. They add bold volume without the weight, making them ideal for extended wear.
  • Closure: Post earrings with butterfly backs, flat-back earrings, and hinge-back hoops are all very safe for sensitive ears. A general rule of thumb is to be more cautious with screw-on earrings, as they can sometimes catch.

How We Tested Earrings for Sensitive Ears

To find the earrings that actually lived up to their sensitive-ear-friendly claims, we compiled 30+ pairs across price points, styles, and materials. Over three weeks, we wore each pair multiple times (think: work, workouts, dinners, and even to bed) and considered the following:

  • Comfort: We wore each pair for at least four hours at a time to evaluate whether they caused itching, burning, redness, or any discomfort. We prioritized earrings that were lightweight and easy to forget you were wearing. Any pair that triggered instant irritation was automatically eliminated.
  • Material: We cross-checked each brand’s hypoallergenic and nickel-free claims against the actual material composition, looking for high-quality metals like titanium, stainless steel, or solid gold. We mainly considered brands that used implant-grade or medical-grade metals, too.
  • Style: Well, yes, of course, these pieces had to be kind to our ears, but even kinder on the eyes. We looked for on-trend and timeless silhouettes—whether in huggie or drop form—and added options that could transition seamlessly from everyday to event wear.
  • Durability: No one wants a pair of earrings that tarnish after two wears. We checked each style for fading, flaking, or signs of wear after repeated use. All of our top picks held up beautifully, so you can purchase with knowledge that they’ll stay in your jewelry arsenal for a long, long time.
FAQ
  • Why are some people sensitive to earrings?

Some people are genetically prone to skin allergies from products like jewelry, cosmetics, or clothing—especially those with a history of eczema, says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, M.D. Jewelry is a common trigger due to prolonged skin contact, and costume pieces are especially risky because they often contain nickel. “That’s why even the inside of your jeans button can cause a reaction,” Dr. Zeichner adds.

  • Can you wear earrings if you have sensitive ears?

You can, says Dr. Zeichner, but you may have to be more wary of buying earrings that are unlikely to cause an allergic reaction, like those on this list. Metals like gold, platinum, or titanium are commonly used when a piercing is first performed to allow it to heal properly without causing a reaction in the skin.

  • What should you do if your ear is irritated from wearing earrings?

If you do develop a reaction in the area where jewelry touches the skin, the first step is to remove the jewelry and to apply a moisturizer. “If the skin is angry, an ointment like Aquaphor is a great option to hydrate and protect the skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. “If that is not working, you can apply over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream twice daily for a few days to cool down the rash.” And, if that’s not effective, then consider consulting a dermatologist for a prescription medication.
