Summertime Suede

Once upon a time, suede was primarily an autumn textile. Not anymore: This summer, you can expect suede sandals to surge in all sorts of styles, from soft suede Birkenstocks to strappy boho silhouettes. “Suede is having a major moment right now—we’re seeing suede trending in outerwear, handbags, and now sandals,” says New York-based stylist Audree Kate López. “Boho fashion has had its revival in the past year, and this is the perfect shoe to add a boho element without having to buy an entirely new outfit.”

Vivid Hues

Neutral footwear will always have a place in our wardrobes, but this summer, stylists say to embrace a rainbow of styles. “Bright-colored sandals are going to be huge this summer,” Anthropologie head of styling Kyla Flax confirms. “With the resurgence of bright sneakers, we’re transitioning that energy into sandals as we head into the warmer months. Think neon greens, bold oranges, and pastel pinks—all sure to add an instant pop to any outfit.”

If you’re worried that your wardrobe isn’t bold enough to suit a vivid sandal, think again. “I love the bright colors styled back to lighter wash denim looks,” Flax says. “It’s all about having fun with your wardrobe this summer.”

Wood Soles

Chunky lug soles are always fun, but this summer, wood accents are making a statement. “A major footwear trend we’re styling this season is the wood-bottom sandal,” Flax says. “With so many great options to choose from, each pair adds a touch of luxury to any look.” Flats, wedges, platforms, or heels: Whichever you prefer, a wood-soled version is bound to turn heads.

Thong Sandals

Classic flip-flop silhouettes are everywhere right now—in flat, kitten heel, wedge, and platform iterations, at that. “Thong sandals are the ultimate summer staple,” Flax says. “They’re simple, sleek, and undeniably comfortable. This year, we’re seeing updated designs like kitten heels or straps that lace up, which make them feel elevated.” 

Contrary to past belief, thong sandals aren’t for casual occasions only. “I love that designer brands are showing thong jelly sandals styled back to more elevated occasion or date night outfits,” Flax adds. “Try a slinky slip dress with these colorful sandals.”

Y2K Platforms and Wedges

Another blast from the past sandal trend for 2025? “We first saw platforms have a major moment at the start of the 2020s with the Y2K revival, and now it’s transcended into various style categories, including sandals,” López says. 

Of the various early aughts-inspired styles, López is particularly fond of the wedge. “Wedges are back, and as a millennial, I’m intrigued,” she admits. “At first, I was conflicted because of my disdain for the return of low-rise jeans and early 2000s fashion, but as a 30-something who cannot wear five-inch stilettos anymore, my knees and ankles are rejoicing for the ankle support of a wedge.”

But to be clear: These aren’t the wedges of yesteryear. “We’re seeing all leather wedges, lucite and acrylic heels, minimalist and barely there straps for the ultimate chic, elongated look—and I love it,” López says. “If you want the height without the skinny stiletto pain, opt for a wedge.”

Embellished Sandals

This summer, embellished sandals are giving your feet the same adorned treatment you so often give your hands, neck, and ears. “This summer, we’re plunging foot-first into texture, embellishment, beading, and novelty,” Flax says. “Sandals with hardware have this cool vibe that’s perfect for the season. They can elevate your everyday style without being too over-the-top, like jewelry for your feet.”

When shopping for embellished sandals, opt for charms, studs, gems, shells—anything that makes them stand out. “If you’re looking to add more accessories to your summer wardrobe, toe ring sandals are perfect,” López says. “They add a hint of metallic to your look, and you don’t have to worry about jewelry because the shoes are doing all of the talking.”

Lace-Up Ankle Wrap

Craving a little spice for your summer ensemble? Turn your attention to lace-up designs. “These sandals are a minimalist’s go-to,” Flax says. “Typically crafted from leather in black, neutral, or metallic tones, they’re perfect for showing a little leg.” And they go with just about every summer outfit: “Pair them with miniskirts, shorts, or dresses, and finish the look with an oversized bag and aviator sunglasses,” Flax suggests.

Metallic Sandals

Metallic footwear has been trending for years, and it’s continuing its reign this summer. “A metallic sandal is the perfect way to add a little sparkle to your summer look, or to elevate a simple summer dress or casual shorts,” López says. There’s a metallic sandal style for every occasion, whether you’re enjoying a picnic (hello, dainty metallic fisherman sandal) or a night out on the town (square-toe pumps are the winner here).

Kitten Heels

As López mentioned, ultra-high heels aren’t exactly easy to walk in. If you want to elevate your look without risking discomfort, reach for kitten heels this summer. “The kitten heel is here to stay, and you can expect to see T-strap, thong, and asymmetrical strappy silhouettes in the category,” she tells us. “I love that these can add a point of interest and intricacy to a look without a loud print or layer.”

Rope Sandals

Rope sandals are making a textural splash heading into summer 2025. “Rope sandals are one of the most exciting trends this summer, and they tie perfectly into the broader fisherman trend,” Flax says. “Their textured, natural look evokes that rugged, outdoorsy feel that’s been making waves.”

Like all of the sandals on this list, rope styles are possible to dress up or down. That said, Flax likes to keep them casual: “I’d pair them with slouchy pants, a bathing suit top, and an unbuttoned shirt,” she shares.

Espadrilles

Only some espadrilles are sandals, but the category remains a summer staple nonetheless. “Espadrilles are timeless; they’ve been around forever, but this summer, they’re having a real moment,” Flax says. “What’s great about espadrilles is their versatility. They work with almost anything and embody that effortless Mediterranean aesthetic that feels fresh but also nostalgic.”
