The news that Julio Torres’s off-Broadway show Color Theories is coming to HBO as a special couldn’t have come at a better time. I couldn’t stop whining that I wasn’t able to see it in real life, and now that my chance is coming I’ll have so much time free for color theory research of my own.

While there are some shade combos that will always be famous when cold weather rolls around—think red and green, black and black, and animal print and anything—we’re ready to mix it up a little bit this fall.

After a year spent fixating on bold shades like guava pink, baby blue, and chartreuse, it’s time to up the ante. We’re still making room for these colors in our closets (you knew those powdery ballet flats were going to be a staple, didn’t you?), but we’re pairing them with other bright, and somewhat unexpected, hues.

Ahead, discover six of this fall’s go-to color combos, plus some shopping picks to help you work them into your own wardrobe.

We’ve already discussed at length how great blue and brown are together, but their magnificence needs to be mentioned here, too. A Y2K-fave combo made famous by Vera Bradley bags and teal-gowned red carpet looks, this fall’s approach swaps in a dustier blue alongside that great dark chocolate shade.

This isn’t your mothers’ (by whom I mean Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s) pink and green combo. This fall’s green of choice leans more olive or chartreuse, but can be swapped in for a more army-green shade if you want to soften things up. And the pink? Juicy as can be. Excitingly, both shades have been a favorite of accessory designers as of late, so it’s especially easy to work them into your rotation.

Remove the blue from your favorite elementary school color combo (and any color combo, really, it’s basic theory that you need all three to make anything else!) and you’re left with red and yellow. This red is bright and poppy like its namesake flower. The corresponding yellow is soft and light, more akin to heavy cream than a sunflower. And no, it’s not giving ketchup and mustard—though there is a reason those two shades look so good together, too.

Someday, when gender reveal cannons are completely passé, maybe we can save the leftover glitter from eternity in a landfill and get some chic decor moving. Baby blue and baby pink are both legendary shades, and—though it doesn’t happen too often in the world save for in the actual baby aisle—they look great together. Think the Marie Antoinette shoe scene, or the movie’s color palette in general. Add in some brown and taupe tones to up the fall vibes.

For this pairing, think blueberries in your porridge. Its comforting and creamy with a pop of color to remind us that berry brightness can exist in a neutral wardrobe setting. This can be so simple as wearing dark wash jeans and an oatmeal sweater! (Mmmm. Especially if it’s the sweater Harry wears in When Harry Met Sally.) Or… a navy sweater dress and creamy tights. So cozy.

Well…duh. If any shades were going to make a second appearance on this list, it would be these two. Coming off of this year’s butter mania and last year’s chocolate brown obsession, we’re in for a…chocolate and butter baguette fall. Yeah, you heard that right. The famous French after-school snack, le goûter, can help your look eat in the office, too.
