If there’s one guarantee when you’re a beauty editor, it’s that people in your life will ask you for product recommendations. One of the categories my loved ones always ask me about is moisturizers. It’s a challenge because everyone’s skincare needs are different. Still, after years of testing more than 50 formulas throughout various phases of my skin journey, I keep coming back to these five—and they seem to work just as well for my friends and family.

From a barrier-strengthening pick I’ve relied on for years when my skin is irritated or dry, to a luxurious night cream my mom regularly thanks me for turning her on to, these are the five moisturizers I would buy if I needed to start my skincare collection from scratch. What’s more, all my faves are on sale for Cyber Monday, with discounts up to 30% for a limited time.

The Barrier-Repairing Moisturizer

Skinfix barrier+ Strengthening and Moisturizing Triple Lipid-Peptide Refillable Cream

The first moisturizer I recommend to anyone and everyone is this gem from Skinfix. It has a rich yet nongreasy texture, loaded with peptides and ceramides that help support a healthy skin barrier while plumping and deeply hydrating the skin. When my skin was super oily in my early twenties, this was my go-to nighttime moisturizer. It was a bit too heavy for daytime use, especially under makeup, but when I applied it at night, I was blown away by how well it soothed irritation and kept my complexion balanced. Now that my skin has balanced out, I reach for it whenever my skin is acting up or I need a healthy dose of moisture, including during the day. I’ve recommended this one to so many people in my life, and I’ve only received positive reviews from them.

A super lightweight moisturizer that you can wear on its own or layer with other products is a skincare must-have, and this peptide- and ceramide-rich one is my favorite. I reach for it on humid days when my skin is oily and a classic cream would be too heavy; the fluid texture offers just the right amount of hydration (and some glow) without any trace of residue. I also adore this pick for layering under SPF. When I apply a face sunscreen on top of a standard moisturizer, I break out due to the excessive product on my skin. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen when I forgo a cream and opt for this fluid under SPF. Plus, it’s just $21 (20% off!) on Prequel RN for Cyber Monday, just add the code “BFCM20” at checkout.

Gel creams have been a staple of my skincare routine since I was a teenager; they’re lightweight and refreshing, making them perfect for hot summer days or those with oily skin. I discovered this $20 pick last year, and I’ve since bought a second one to keep at my parents’ house for when I spend time there during the summer—it’s that good. The texture is both plush and weightless—a combination that sounds contradictory yet is somehow a wonderful reality. It feels soft and soothing on the skin, and I appreciate that it offers long-lasting moisture without being sticky or greasy. It’s hydrating enough for those with dry skin to use during the daytime, but not too rich for those with oily skin. It’s also fragrance-free, making it an excellent choice for sensitive skin types.

I’ve been recommending products to my mom for years, but there’s none she raves about quite as much as she does this one. And I totally get why—IMO, it’s the crème de la crème of night creams. The texture is buttery-smooth and rich, and it absorbs into the skin without feeling heavy, unlike some night creams. Once it fully absorbs, it leaves your skin feeling noticeably calm and quenched. Both my mom and I have noticed how soft our skin feels the morning after applying a nice layer before bed. It’s certainly a splurge item, but if you’re looking for a luxurious addition to your skincare routine, I think you’ll be incredibly pleased with this moisturizer.

The Indulgent Nighttime Treatment

Tatcha makes some of my favorite skincare products, but this is the one I reach for when my skin looks lackluster or feels irritated. It has the National Eczema Association seal of approval, meaning it’s suitable for those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It features a rich, incredibly smooth texture (it’s genuinely unlike anything else I’ve tried) and is formulated with ceramides and Japanese indigo extract to soothe and calm the skin. Just one light layer instantly moisturizes and comforts my skin—I liken it to the feeling of taking a deep breath. I notice an improvement in the look and feel of my skin every time I apply this pick—it’s undoubtedly worth the splurge if you’re looking for a soothing nighttime treatment cream.
