Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Brussels for the EU summit with Washington’s support in doubt. He is set to hold his first formal bilateral talks with Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar. Also: EU leaders failed to agree on the EU budget, and we hear from Irish EU affairs minister Thomas Byrne.
On today’s show:
Sasha Vakulina reports on the arrival of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels and speaks to his deputy chief of staff. She looks at how seriously Ukraine is considering reducing its dependence on American military technology, and whether Europe can realistically provide the security guarantees Kyiv needs without the US.
Euronews’s Sándor Zsiros reports from the European Council ahead of Zelenskyy’s first formal bilateral meeting with Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, a first sign of a reset between Kyiv and Budapest now that Viktor Orbán is gone.
Shona Murray reports from the European Council on a much longer evening session than expected, what happened, and where the much-invoked unity was. She interviews Thomas Byrne, Ireland’s EU affairs minister.
Dirk Gotink, Dutch member of the European Parliament (EPP), discusses whether Europe should confront the United States over its attacks on the International Criminal Court, and why using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine remains difficult.
