New Zealand’s Mt. Hutt will look a little bit different next season.
The resort recently announced $12 million in upgrades at the resort’s base area, significantly improving and expanding its facilities for guests and staff. The Canterbury-based resort will begin the project over the summer, with completion planned ahead of the 2027 ski season.
The most significant upgrade comes with the resort’s sun deck. Mt. Hutt is more than tripling its size, taking it from 430 square meters to 1,3oo. The deck will also be fully heated, keeping guests warm and comfortable while they enjoy a drink outdoors.
The project includes several other upgrades across the base area. The resort is adding a new ground-floor toilet block, improved heated access steps to snow level, an additional cafe outlet, and extra storage space for guests and staff.

According to Mt. Hutt Ski Area Manager James McKenzie, the upgrades add much-needed space.
“We have a great base lodge that works really well for us operationally, but we’re now at the point where adding more space and seating will make a real difference, particularly on those bluebird days, after new snow, when everyone wants to be up the mountain,” James told the New Zealand Harold. “It also gives us the opportunity to introduce an exciting new food and beverage outlet. We’ll have more to share about that over the summer.”
Mt. Hutt is coming off a season that had both difficult and positive moments. June 2026 was the warmest on record, bringing abysmal early-season conditions. The resort was ultimately forced to push back its opening date by over two weeks, finally beginning its season on June 27, 2026.
Thankfully for Mt. Hutt, the weather did a full 180-degree turn once July hit. Between July 1 and July 2, New Zealand’s South Island was thrashed by a Tasman Sea low-pressure system, bringing high winds and lots of snow. By its end, Mt. Hutt received nearly a meter (39 inches) of fresh snow in just over 24 hours, allowing it to open roughly 95% of its terrain.
Having waited weeks for solid conditions, skiers took to Mt. Hutt en masse. The snow, in combination with the Matariki (Māori New Year) holiday, helped the resort see its busiest day in a decade on July 3, with over 10,000 skiers visiting.
While that many skiers is certainly good for business, it had its drawbacks. Powder was quickly tracked out, lift lines were long, and the base area was packed to its limits.
If July 3 said anything about New Zealand skiers, it’s that they are always hungry for laps when conditions are good. By expanding its facilities, Mt. Hutt hopes it can meet the demand and accommodate all skiers when visitation is at its highest.
“Mt Hutt has become gradually and consistently busier over time,” James said in the New Zealand Harold‘s article. “We’re now matching our investment in the base facilities to accommodate that growth.”
Despite the slow start to Mt. Hutt’s season, good days brought plenty of skiers. The resort’s base area improvements are designed to give skiers more room to enjoy the resort with an expanded sun deck, extra storage, and more. When the 2027 season comes next year and Hutt has its first major powder day, the resort and its base area will be ready for all the skiers it can handle.
