  • Arenas wins Supersport title
  • Race1 to start at 15:30 local time
  • Bulega takes Estoril pole, Lowes surprises for Bimota
  • Bulega under the lap record on lap one of Superpole

Newly crowned champion Nicolo Bulega comes into Saturday as the fastest from Friday, when he topped both sessions despite feeling as though he still has margin to find. The Italian broke the lap record in Superpole this morning to take pole position.

Alberto Surra was second-fastest in both sessions yesterday, although he used a new tyre to do it, while Iker Lecuona was third. Lecuona qualified second this morning, but feels he needs to find something in order to take the fight to Bulega in the races.

Alex Lowes also impressed in Superpole, finishing third-fastest to take his second front row start of the year.

Honda had a decent day with Jake Dixon in the top-10, while Somkiat Chantra was 13th overall and trying to implement some things he used in MotoGP at Motegi when he filled in for Joan Mir.

Miguel Oliveira had a better day for BMW, finishing fourth. The Portuguese rider said he had to make some changes in the afternoon to fine-tune his feeling on the bike, and noted that there is a “delicate” situation with the front tyre choicethis weekend.

In the battle for third in the championship, Yari Montella was faster than both Sam Lowes and Alex Lowes in FP2. The Italian could wrap up the bronze medal this weekend, but needs to extend his lead over fourth by 20 points by the end of Sunday in order to do so.

Bulega wins Race 1

It’s a record-equalling 27th win of the season for Nicolo Bulega in Race 1 at Estoril. Lecuona second from Surra, a first long race podium for him.

Oliveira fourth, then Alex Lowes, Baldassarri, Bassani, Monntella, Bautista, and Gerloff complete the top-10.

16:03

Crash for Manzi, he’s gone down at turn nine on the penultimate lap.

16:03
Lap 20/21

2.8s for Bulega as we head onto the penultimate lap. Pass that lap from Gerloff on Sam Lowes pushed the Marc VDS rider out of the top-10.

15:59

Montella makes the same move as he made against Baldassarri, but Bautista sees him coming and sits up to avoid the contact. P8 now for Montella, and a second up the road to Bassani.

15:58
Lap 17/21

Almost 3s now for Bulega as we go into the last four laps.

Further back, Montella has caught Bautista for eighth, but the two-time champion the faster of them at the moment.

15:53

Montella’s recovery has now brought him up to ninth, past Sam Lowes. Bautista next up for the Italian, a second up the road.

15:47
Lap 10/21

Almost at half-distance now and Bulega’s lead is out to almost two seconds over Lecuona. Surra another 3.6s back, and Oliveira still 1.1s behind Surra.

Further back, Baldassarri has passed Bassani for sixth and Bautista is seemingly getting stronger, also putting pressure on Bassani.

15:43

Montella’s recovered to 10th now and 1.5s behind Sam Lowes. Could get back to eighth or ninth but chance here for Alex Lowes in fifth to take points in the battle for third in the standings.

15:41

Montella and Baldassarri make contact at turn three. Baldassarri ran in deep and Montella tried to take advantage on the inside, but the lines converged at the second apex and Montella was forced to pick up, might’ve lost a wing in that.

Montella then runs wide at turn one on the following lap and he’s back to P12.

15:38
Lap 5/21

Front two separated by half-a-second or so, but they have 2s over Surra now. Surra, in turn, just over a second clear of Oliveira.

15:35
Bulega leads

Bulega with a late-braking move of his own on Lecuona to start lap three and he leads.

Oliveira up to fourth past Lowes at the same turn. Both ran wide which has opened a bit of a gap up to Surra.

15:34

Lecuona had about half-a-second at the end of lap one, but that’s completely disappeared within just a couple of corners of Bulega getting into second.

15:33
Bulega P2

Bulega up to P2 at turn one on lap two. Surra then takes advantage of Lowes’ loss of rhythm and passes for third at turn three.

15:31
Race 1 start

It’s lights out in Estoril and we’re underway for Race 1.

Holeshot for Lecuona with some late braking at turn one. Bulega wide on the exit as a result and Alex Lowes gets up to second.

Arenas speaks

Arenas has spoken after winning the Supersport title.

“First of all thank you very much to all the team, Yamaha, to all the sponsors,” he told the world feed.

“This amazing team, thanks to them – we were in the first test and I couldn’t believe that this was possible. Well, of course I believed!

“Today, the race, what to say? Was an unbelievably difficult race for me, I put the maximum pace I had and we could see there was nothing else left for me on the track.

“It was hard for me to setup the bike in one day and maybe we can do a little bit of improvement for tomorrow.

“But I gave absolutely everything, these Triumphs were rockets yesterday and then, well, everyone was launching, I did my best. Really proud about the team, thanks very much to everybody and I’m really thankful.”

“Everything was done really last minute and they did since Race 1 with the victory until the end of the season, until now, fantastic job, outstanding, so I’m really proud of this team and Albert.

“Second year in a row manufacturers’ champions, so well done to everyone, well done to Yamaha, and now it’s time to celebrate.”

Canepa added: “Albert had a very clear idea in his mind, was just to win, and he’s a real professional rider, really talented. He had this in his mind and he did it, so really congratulations to him.”

Arenas Supersport champion

The World Supersport race has just finished at Estoril and with fourth place Albert Arenas is crowned champion.

It’s the second year in a row that the title has been decided at Estoril – Stefano Manzi was crowned after Race 2 at the penultimate round last year.

It’s also Arenas’ second title, after he won the 2020 Moto3 crown – also in Portugal at the Portimao circuit.
