Our guest today is Jeff Banks, CEO and Founder of AspectAvy, a real-time avalanche location intelligence tool for backcountry travelers across America. But this episode of The SnowBrains Podcast is a little different. Instead of focusing on Jeff’s backstory and the incredible work Aspect Avy is doing for the backcountry ski community, Jeff joins us on the podcast to discuss last winter’s Castle Peak avalanche in Lake Tahoe, CA, which took the lives of 9 people. It was the deadliest avalanche in California’s history and tied for the deadliest ski or snowboard accident in North American history.
For such a tragic incident, the best thing we can do is try to learn from previous people’s mistakes, understand their perspectives, and make sure we don’t do the same thing. That is where Jeff’s experience and knowledge come in, as we take a deep dive into the Castle Peak avalanche and discuss the conditions, choices, and ultimate results of the 14-person group traveling back from the Frog Lake Backcountry Huts on February 17, 2026.
