Mammoth Mountain, California, received its first snow of the 2026-27 season on Monday, September 28, when a dusting fell at McCoy Station. Mammoth Mountain opening day is still planned for Friday, November 13.

The snow was light, falling only at high elevations and totaling no more than an inch. Mammoth shared video from McCoy Station, which sits at 9,360 feet, but the snow had melted by Tuesday morning, and the summit showed no sign of it.

Opening Day Is About Six Weeks Away

If November 13 holds, Mammoth will be the first California resort to open, a week ahead of Heavenly and Northstar, which are scheduled to open November 20. Palisades Tahoe is targeting a Wednesday, November 25, opening date. The resort announced its target date this summer, after a season that ended June 7 with 199 days of operation and 297 inches of snow. That total topped the 286 inches of 2024-25, though it still fell short of the resort’s average of about 400 inches.

Mammoth Mountain opening day can move, as last year showed. Mammoth first targeted November 14 last year, then shifted it one day to November 15 to take advantage of a forecast storm. The date slipped again because high snow lines during the region’s first significant storm cut into conditions, and lifts finally started turning on November 20.
