Jaume Guardeño underwent brain surgery as he continues his long recovery from a terrible training crash in March.

The 23-year-old Spaniard was hospitalized after he reportedly struck a stone while training, lost control of his bike, and collided with a vehicle at speed.

He was initially treated in intensive care in a Catalonian hospital and described as “critical but stable.” He was transferred to the Guttmann Clinic, a specialist neurorehabilitation center in Barcelona, in May.

Guardeño’s team Caja Rural-Seguros RGA confirmed this week that the rider recently underwent successful surgery.

“Jaume Guardeño has been operated upon with success by the doctor Andrea Gabarros Canales, a renowned neurosurgeon from Barcelona, in order to continue his recovery process,” read a team statement released Wednesday.

“He has once again been transferred to the Clínica Guttmann, where the rehabilitation team remains closely involved in his neurorehabilitation process.”

It’s unknown what’s next for the budding pro. Caja Rural-Seguros RGA did not provide any further details on his condition.

“We are grateful to the medical teams for the great work they are carrying out, and we continue to send all our support and closeness to Jaume, as well as his family and friends, accompanying them at this complicated time,” the team wrote.

Guardeño’s crash this spring rocked the cycling world. After rising through the Caja Rural devo system, his ongoing recovery has shadowed the team.

The 23-year-old raced to 14th at his grand tour debut at the 2025 Vuelta a España and is contracted to Caja Rural-Seguros RGA through 2027.

Spanish media reported he was more than likely to make his Tour de France debut this summer.

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA paid tribute to the absent rider at its first Tour in 38 years by adding the hashtag #ForçaJaume to its special edition kits.
