Finally, Volkswagen has revealed a camper version of the ID. Buzz and it’s named the ID. California Cruise. It’s been four years since the first ID.Buzz hit the road in the UK in 2022, which is a long time for VW to tease customers desperately hoping for the totally retro camping experience.

First unveiled at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, the camper is one of a series of electric California models to come by 2028. Though strictly speaking, this model isn’t a ‘proper’ California – it won’t have a pop-out roof – but VW isn’t too bothered about disappointing the hardcore Dubbers.

It starts at just over €60,000 and available in short or long-wheelbase form but is kitted out with added extras to make it ready to camp.

What makes it ready for a camping trip?

Well, not a huge amount. A folding mattress measuring 2.03m by 1.20m for a tight two-person slumber can be unfurled over the rear bench and boot. There are blackout blinds (even if you opt for the panoramic roof), vents on the front side windows alongside a couple of camping chairs and a folding table.

The more impressive stuff comes from it being all-electric. With a full battery the climate temperatures can be maintained for up to 48 hours continuously when stationary. Then when you’re set up for the night, there’s always power to the USB ports and interior lights.

Meanwhile, the V2L has a peak output of 3.6kW and a continuous output of 2000W which is enough to power portable electric hobs, coffee machines, cool boxes and even charge up e-bike and e-scooters.

So when is it coming to the UK?

Well, it isn’t. Though VW say there is another UK-fit model along these lines that we’ll hear about in the coming months. We’ll keep you updated.
