Under normal circumstances, clearing a course at a pro bike race is the job of race officials and police. At the Bretagne Classic on Sunday, riders in the lead group took things into their own hands when they encountered a fan riding on the closed course.
Riding in the lead group of six, Liam Slock (Lotto-Intermarché) and Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) both had the same idea, grabbing a bottle and spraying the offending fan as they passed by. Whether it was water or a far less pleasant sticky drink mix we’re not sure. Either way the fan should have gotten the message loud and clear: stop riding.
Luckily the small group was able to navigate around the course invader, but things could have turned out worse had it been a full peloton. Fan interference in pro races can have major consequences, leading to race-ending, season-ending, or worse consequences.
Alex Aranburu (Cofidis) ended up winning the 90th edition of the race on Sunday.
