A mountaineer died Sunday morning after falling from the Matterhorn in Switzerland, according to the Valais Cantonal Police. The accident occurred on August 30, 2026, at approximately 7 a.m. Two men were climbing the Matterhorn via the Lion Ridge (German: Liongrat), when one of them fell for reasons that remain unknown.
The climber fell from an altitude of approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet), suffering fatal injuries. The surviving climbing partner immediately alerted rescuers. A helicopter operated by Air Zermatt was dispatched to the accident site on behalf of the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organization (KWRO 144). Rescuers reached the scene but could only confirm that the mountaineer had died.
The deceased has not yet been formally identified, according to the Valais Cantonal Police. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
The Matterhorn rises to 4,478 meters (14,692 feet) on the Swiss-Italian border and is one of the most recognizable and sought-after alpine summits in the world. Each year, around 300-400 people attempt to climb the Matterhorn with a mountain guide and another 3,500 attempt it without a guide. Sadly, the mountain claims on average 10 deaths annually, which makes it one of the deadliest mountains in terms of total deaths in Europe behind Mont Blanc. Its four steep faces and exposed ridges make climbing the mountain a serious undertaking, with conditions capable of changing rapidly even during the summer climbing season.
The Lion Ridge, or Liongrat, is the Italian-side route toward the summit. It is considered a demanding alpine route involving exposed rock and mixed climbing at high altitude.
