Bill Belichick has spent much of his career proving that an uncompromising approach can produce championships. Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson believes that same philosophy could now be the very thing preventing the six-time Super Bowl winner from returning to the NFL.

The former Cincinnati Bengals receiver argued that Belichick’s famously demanding coaching style is increasingly at odds with a league dominated by younger players who expect a different relationship with their coaches.

Speaking on “Nightcap” alongside Shannon Sharpe, Johnson pointed to the generational shift taking place across the NFL and questioned whether Belichick’s old-school methods would still translate.

“I think it’s the coaching style,” Ochocinco said. “I think it’s the coaching style. I don’t think his coaching style would resonate with today’s players. I don’t think it would resonate… I don’t think players will respond to that extremely well.”

Belichick coached the New England Patriots from 2000 through 2023, building one of the greatest dynasties in professional sports alongside Tom Brady. But after leaving New England and failing to land another NFL job, he eventually moved into college football with North Carolina.

Johnson believes that may reflect a broader change in what NFL organizations now want from their head coaches.

Younger NFL players require different approach

“I think with the younger generation, I think that’s why if you look at most of the coaches throughout the NFL and look at the landscape outside of Harbaugh, it’s more younger coaches, coaches that the players can actually relate to and understand,” Johnson said.

“That old school style, that militant style of coaching, yeah, I don’t think it would go over very well, especially with this generation that is very very sensitive.”

Sharpe had raised the contrast with John Harbaugh, who quickly returned to coaching after the end of his long tenure with the Baltimore Ravens. Belichick’s situation has unfolded differently.

After separating from the Patriots in January 2024, he spent the following NFL season out of coaching before accepting the North Carolina job in December.

His first season in Chapel Hill produced a 4-8 record and significant scrutiny around the program, although Year 2 began more encouragingly with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Ireland.

Do his methods still work?

The TCU result offered Belichick a timely response to critics questioning whether his approach remains effective.

North Carolina held the Horned Frogs scoreless after their opening two drives and produced a disciplined defensive performance that looked much closer to the identity Belichick built during his NFL career.

That doesn’t necessarily change Johnson’s argument. The challenge of managing an NFL locker room is different from developing a college program, and younger head coaches have increasingly become prominent across the league.

Belichick’s resume guarantees that his football knowledge will never seriously be questioned. Whether another NFL franchise would hand him control of a modern locker room is a different issue.

Ochocinco’s view is that the game has changed, the players have changed, and Belichick may have to change with them if he ever wants another opportunity in the NFL.
