Icelanders have voted against reopening talks on joining the European Union, with nearly 53% rejecting the proposal and just over 47% backing it.

The referendum has revived a long-running debate that began after Iceland first applied for EU membership in 2009, before talks were halted in 2013.

Fishing rights remained a key concern for opponents, while supporters argued the vote was only about restarting negotiations.

Despite the result, Iceland will maintain its close ties with Europe through the European Economic Area and the Schengen Zone.
