Royce White has taken his unusual campaign for a place in the WNBA straight to the sidelines.
The former NBA first-round pick arrived at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday night to watch the Indiana Fever face the Connecticut Sun, but he wasn’t dressed like an ordinary courtside spectator.
White wore a long blonde wig and embraced the character he has created as part of his controversial push to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft.
The Fever ultimately cruised to a 111-91 victory over Connecticut, but White’s appearance generated plenty of attention away from the action on the court.
White also posted about his appearance on Instagram, where he referred to himself as “Queen Roysha” and used deliberately provocative language while discussing his identity.
“The Kweeeen has arrived! They better bow for a beautiful Black Trans Lesbian!,” White wrote.
The timing was particularly notable because the WNBA has reportedly already ruled White and former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom ineligible for the 2027 draft. Both men had announced plans to enter the league while saying they identify as women.
League sources told Reuters that neither is eligible, although the WNBA hasn’t publicly laid out a detailed explanation for the individual decisions.
White’s original draft declaration was submitted to the league through his attorney, former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz. Since then, he has continued to publicize his campaign rather than backing away after the reported ruling.
White’s courtside appearance follows Kanter Freedom controversy
White’s decision to attend the Fever game also comes shortly after Kanter Freedom became involved in a confrontation at another Indiana game.
Kanter Freedom was at the Fever’s Aug. 23 matchup with the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena when he became involved in a heated exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. Security eventually removed him from the arena during the third quarter.
The Chicago Sky later banned him from attending games at the venue, with team owner Michael Alter describing him as a potential threat.
The incident added to the publicity campaign being pursued by the two former NBA players. Their actions have drawn strong reactions from members of the WNBA, including Cloud and Los Angeles Sparks center Cameron Brink.
Brink publicly criticized Kanter Freedom after his ejection, accusing him of targeting the transgender community.
White, meanwhile, appears determined to keep the controversy visible. His blonde-wig appearance in Indianapolis gave him another opportunity to turn the draft dispute into a public spectacle, even though his reported ineligibility means he won’t be joining the Fever or another WNBA team through the 2027 draft.
White’s latest courtside appearance suggests he isn’t planning to let the WNBA’s reported decision end the conversation.
