The Golden State Warriors appear ready to give Stephen Curry something almost every superstar wants at the end of a legendary career: complete control over his future.
Curry becomes eligible for a new extension on August 29, with the maximum deal reportedly worth two years and approximately $136.7 million.
If he accepts it, the agreement would keep him in Golden State through the 2028-29 season and take his total earnings over the next three years to more than $199 million, including his roughly $62.6 million salary for 2026-27.
However, the money may only be part of the Warriors’ remarkable proposal. According to ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, Golden State is prepared to let Curry decide what kind of contract works best for him.
That could mean taking the maximum, accepting less money to give the franchise greater roster flexibility, or waiting until next summer to become an unrestricted free agent.
The message is clear, as the Warriors don’t want to dictate how Curry’s final chapter should look.
Curry holds the key to Golden State’s future
Keeping Curry is also a complicated basketball decision for Golden State. The 38-year-old remains one of the league’s most influential players, but his age and recent injury history make a long-term commitment more complicated than it would’ve been earlier in his career.
Curry appeared in only 43 games last season after dealing with a knee injury that kept him sidelined for roughly two months. Even so, his importance to the Warriors extends far beyond what he produces on the court.
He has delivered four NBA championships, changed the way basketball is played and become the defining face of the Golden State franchise.
His presence also remains enormously valuable commercially, making the decision to keep him in the Bay Area about much more than salary-cap calculations.
A maximum extension would guarantee Curry’s place in Golden State through the latter stages of his career, but it could also make it harder for the Warriors to add another superstar.
The organization has explored major opportunities involving players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, yet none of those blockbuster moves came to fruition.
That leaves Golden State facing a difficult balancing act. The Warriors want to maximize whatever remains of Curry’s championship window while also ensuring they’re not left without a path forward once their franchise icon eventually retires.
Still, everything currently points toward Curry finishing his career where it began. General manager Mike Dunleavy has indicated that neither the team nor Curry is considering another destination, while the Warriors reportedly have no intention of trading him.
After everything Curry has given the franchise, Golden State appears prepared to let its greatest player determine how his final chapter should unfold.
