Construction Underway on One of Central Europe’s Most Ambitious Ski Resort Projects

Construction is underway to transform a small western Romanian ski area into one of the largest year-round tourist destinations in the country.

Romania is likely not one of the first countries that comes to mind when picturing skiing in Europe. Prospective tourists likely think of French mega-resorts in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Swiss luxury destinations, Austrian powder, or even the granite faces of the Dolomites. However, the Transylvanian Alps, spanning central and western Romania, certainly punch above their weight.

The range, which marks the southern extent of Central Europe’s longest chain — the Carpathian Mountains — stretches for over 250 kilometers (155 miles) all the way to the Serbian border and can reach heights above 2,500 meters (8,202 feet). The Transylvanian Alps are home to a number of regionally impressive ski resorts, such as Straja, Romania’s largest ski area, offering 26 kilometers (16.2 miles) of slopes and a vertical drop of over 700 meters (2,297 feet). Thanks to its high elevation, topping out near 1,900 meters (6,234 feet), it sees some of the largest snow totals in the area, often boasting a base depth of 120 centimeters (47.2 inches) during peak winter periods.

Romania will soon be home to another significant contender on the European ski scene: the Semenic-Văliug-Crivai Tourist Area. The Semenic ski area of western Romania already exists, offering 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) of groomed slopes, serviced by a handful of lifts. However, construction is already underway on an ambitious expansion plan that will not only more than quadruple the resort’s footprint, but turn the area into an attractive year-round destination.

As for the upgraded on-piste experience, the Semenic Tourist Area plans to complete the installation of a Leitner 101-cabin modern gondola, which will transport guests to the resort’s summit in just 11 minutes, allowing visitors to easily access an expanded footprint of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) of piste. The resort is also investing in 98 VIRGA snow lances — energy-efficient snow guns made by Supersnow — which will bolster Semenic’s already respectable natural snowfall and increase terrain reliability, particularly outside of peak winter periods.

Additionally, the resort is planning the development of year-round attractions, making visitation appealing outside of strictly winter months. These offerings include a pump track for bikers, an adventure park complete with a zipline, and an emphasis on outdoor community events during summer months. All in all, the region plans to invest around €44 million ($47.5 million) according to Reşiţa mayor Ioan Popa into the transformation, making it by far the most expensive ski resort expansion project in Romanian history.

Initial phases of the plan, such as the upgraded snowmaking system, are set to be completed as early as the end of 2026, with additional renovations continuing thereafter. When the project is completed, it could make the Transylvanian Alps an even more compelling destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path European ski holiday.
