Tony Romo’s legal troubles have escalated following his July arrest in Wisconsin, with the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback now facing three citations connected to the incident.

Milwaukee County court records show the citations were filed Thursday, Aug. 27, after Romo was arrested July 23 on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The former NFL star is facing allegations of first-offense OWI, unsafe passing on the right and possessing an open intoxicant in his vehicle. He’d also previously been cited for refusing to take an intoxication test.

Romo was stopped while driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee. According to authorities, the traffic stop followed concerns about his driving, including an unsafe pass on the right and cutting across a gore area separating traffic lanes from an entrance ramp.

During the encounter, an open alcoholic beverage was reportedly found inside Romo’s vehicle. Deputies also said he performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.

Romo ultimately refused to take a breathalyzer test and was taken into custody before being booked and released later that evening.

Body-camera footage released several days after the arrest offered a closer look at the traffic stop. Romo told the deputy he’d been at a golf tournament and was heading to visit his grandparents.

The footage showed him completing field sobriety exercises before officers placed him under arrest.

Romo’s CBS future remains uncertain

The legal situation has also put Romo’s broadcasting career under a spotlight. CBS Sports placed him on leave on July 31, saying he’d remain away from his duties until further notice.

J.J. Watt has stepped into Romo’s position alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on CBS’s lead NFL broadcast team.

CBS Sports president David Berson said earlier in August that there was no timetable for Romo’s return, explaining that the network was still evaluating the situation and considering its impact on the company’s image and brand.

Romo has now addressed the controversy through a spokesperson. His representative said Romo accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken steps to resolve what was described as an isolated civil matter.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” a rep said as per TMZ.

“We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”

Romo’s NFL playing career lasted from 2004 through 2017, all with Dallas, before he transitioned into broadcasting with CBS. He became one of the network’s most recognizable NFL analysts and signed a lucrative long-term contract.

Now, however, his immediate future remains unclear. Romo is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21, when the latest citations are expected to be addressed. Until then, both his legal case and his position with CBS remain unresolved.
