After what looked nailed on to be approaching another Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) solo exhibition, stage 6 of the Vuelta a España saw the race leader show rare weakness as he was chased down after attacking. He was forced to battle out the victory in a two-up sprint with a rejuvenated Enric Mas (Movistar).
Pogačar still emerged victorious in Castelló after a brutal day of all-out racing, but the sight of the red jersey being pulled back and briefly overtaken is perhaps the shock of the 2026 race so far, with his air on invincibility being challenged.
After all his struggles in recent seasons, the former four-time Vuelta podium finisher Mas showed signs of his previous best as he bridged across on the 1.9km of gravel on the final climb, before taking second on the stage and moving up to second overall.
Pogačar avoided complete disaster on the final downhill run to the line after overshooting a corner and being forced to go off-road, before managing not to crash and rejoining with Mas.
He didn’t have it all his own way, but when the line arrived, Pogačar completed the hat-trick, matching his haul of stage wins from his Grand Tour debut seven years ago in just six stages.
Mas’ top performance and full commitment with Pogačar in the final 10km saw him gain 52 seconds on the likes of Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who is now in third, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM).
The big losers in the fight for the podium were Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) and Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), who lost 1:38 to Mas. They both dropped to more than five minutes down on Pogačar, who extended his lead over Mas in second to 3:34 thanks to the 10 bonus seconds on the line.

“We had a plan to let the breakaway go today, but it took nearly two hours to form, so in the end, we had to pull less than half a stage to control,” said Pogačar as he explained why UAE went for the stage.
“João and Kevin did a great job to keep it together, and then I could go for the stage with Pavel, Jay and Pablo leading me out on the climb and setting me up for a perfect attack.
Pogačar also shed light on his total surprise at Mas bridging across to him on the final climb, confirming that he was relying on the radio messages for his team that didn’t inform him of the quickly approaching Spaniard.
“I was just really surprised on the top. He flew past me like a rocket. I was not expecting it because I heard on the radio that I was leading by, I don’t know, 40 seconds to the chasers, and there was no mention of Enric,” he said.
“So when he passed me, I was a little bit shocked, and I was sure he knew the downhill. Then I was just happy to be with him in the last 10km into the headwind, because I had no water and it was nice to have a companion with me.
“I knew that I could beat him in the sprint, but I still appreciated that he committed full, and I also committed full to the finish. Chapeau to him and it was a great race.”
How it unfolded
When everyone is expecting a breakaway stage to unfold in modern Grand Tours, it now almost guarantees an all-out, brutal fight to get into any potential move. And that is exactly what occurred in the opening salvo of stage 6 at this year’s Vuelta a España.
Climbing straight out of neutral, the approach to the first categorised climb, Puerto de la Serratella (14km at 3.8%), was characterised by attacks, and they continued onto the long but shallow ascent, with Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Alexey Lutsenko (NSN) making the most significant move.
However, with almost all of the 23 teams present interested in having representation, the pace was kept high all the way over the top of the climb, bringing back all early attackers in what was the most intense fight for the break so far in the 81st edition of La Vuelta.
It continued onto the Coll de la Bandereta (4.6km at 6.7%), but no group was able to actually gain an advantage until the race had crested the summit, with four riders attacking away: George Bennett (NSN), Gijs Leemreize (Picnic PostNL), Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility), and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious).
Barely eking out a lead of more than 20 seconds on the roads through the Valencia region, with 100km to go on the stage, a strong chasing group of 12 quickly pulled off the front of the peloton and soon bridged across.
It was made up of Carlos Canal (Movistar), Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), Tom Gloag (Pinarello Q36.5), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek), Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Gianmarco Garofoli (Soudal-QuickStep), Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education-EasyPost), Hannes Wilksch (Tudor), José Manuel Díaz (Burgos Burpellet BH), Lars Craps (Lotto Intermarché), and Ukro Berrade (Kern Pharma), forming a group 16 in the lead.
Action was far from done in this middle phase of the stage, though, with a series of splits in the peloton seeing race leader Pogačar getting himself into a leading chase group with the likes of white jersey Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos), and only one teammate in Jay Vine.
However, these splits came to nothing with a long valley road separating the race from the second climb on the 177.5km route to the next one. Soon, the race settled into a holding pattern with UAE Team Emirates-XRG working to try and win the stage behind the 16 escapees.
UAE chase down the breakaway on final two climbs
Van Aert took the maximum haul of points at the intermediate sprint in Benicàssim, moving him up to second in the green jersey classification behind Pogačar, and this effort led the breakaway onto the penultimate climb, Desierto de las Palmas (7.6km at 4.9%), where the Belgian pulled the pin on his effort.
With the numeric advantage and likely strongest climber in the break, Bahrain Victorious came to the front with Bilbao, who set a hard tempo for Buitrago to try and give the Colombian a chance at the win, briefly extending the break’s advantage to near three minutes.
Heading downhill, it didn’t take long for UAE to reduce this down to 2:10, with last year’s Vuelta runner-up João Almeida and Kevin Vermaerke put to work to try and keep the deficit small enough before the final ascent, Puerto El Bartolo (9.4km at 7.1%).
Still in control, UAE led the peloton onto the final climb with just 1:30 still to make up on the narrow uphill roads and a crucial 1900 metre section of gravel leading to the summit.
One by one, UAE’s domestiques finished their pulls, with each one bringing the race closer to the inevitable. A huge pull from Vine dropped several riders, and it was a final kick from young talent Pablo Torres that acted as the last lead-out.
Debruyne led the break off the main road and onto the narrow new tarmac which preceded the gravel, but the red jersey was coming, and coming at a rapid rate of knots.
Pogačar makes his move
Having surveyed the group and sprayed himself down with a bottle of water, Pogačar just squeezed with an acceleration in the saddle, dropping several riders but not going all out yet for victory.
Only stuck to his wheel, with Roglič, Carapaz and Mas following in tow, with Gall being the big name off the pace of the main man. Soon though, it was only Onley within touching distance, and the Scot couldn’t hold on for much longer, also losing the wheel with 24km to go.
Pogačar picked off the breakaway riders one by one, with Debruyne and Kron the last men standing and first to reach the dusty gravel roads. Both would’ve seen little more than a red flash as the race leader scorched by them, though and with 23km to go, Pogačar was in the lead and all alone.
The GC podium hopefuls started attacking each other behind the race leader, with Mas looking the strongest but Roglič and Gall also moving nicely over the gravel. At the same time, Onley started to pay for trying to follow Pogačar’s initial move – he would crack and never catch back up to his rivals.
Mas ploughed on so well that after finishing the gravel sector and racing into the final kick before the descent off the final climb, he had Pogačar in his sights and made contact in no time, even coming around the red jersey just before the KOM point in a show of strength.
Aside from a near-crash for the race leader on the downhill, the pair worked well together in the lead to hold off all of the chasers, even into a headwind, but just as was the case at Il Lombardia in 2022, Mas was no match for Pogačar in the sprint á deux.
Debruyne’s great day in the breakaway ended with him taking third and moving up to eighth overall as he led home the group of most of the podium chasers, with Onley and Kuss missing out.

After what looked nailed on to be approaching another Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) solo exhibition, stage 6 of the Vuelta a España saw the race leader show rare weakness as he was chased down after attacking. He was forced to battle out the victory in a two-up sprint with a rejuvenated Enric Mas (Movistar).
Pogačar still emerged victorious in Castelló after a brutal day of all-out racing, but the sight of the red jersey being pulled back and briefly overtaken is perhaps the shock of the 2026 race so far, with his air on invincibility being challenged.
After all his struggles in recent seasons, the former four-time Vuelta podium finisher Mas showed signs of his previous best as he bridged across on the 1.9km of gravel on the final climb, before taking second on the stage and moving up to second overall.
Pogačar avoided complete disaster on the final downhill run to the line after overshooting a corner and being forced to go off-road, before managing not to crash and rejoining with Mas.
He didn’t have it all his own way, but when the line arrived, Pogačar completed the hat-trick, matching his haul of stage wins from his Grand Tour debut seven years ago in just six stages.
Mas’ top performance and full commitment with Pogačar in the final 10km saw him gain 52 seconds on the likes of Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who is now in third, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM).
The big losers in the fight for the podium were Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) and Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), who lost 1:38 to Mas. They both dropped to more than five minutes down on Pogačar, who extended his lead over Mas in second to 3:34 thanks to the 10 bonus seconds on the line.

“We had a plan to let the breakaway go today, but it took nearly two hours to form, so in the end, we had to pull less than half a stage to control,” said Pogačar as he explained why UAE went for the stage.
“João and Kevin did a great job to keep it together, and then I could go for the stage with Pavel, Jay and Pablo leading me out on the climb and setting me up for a perfect attack.
Pogačar also shed light on his total surprise at Mas bridging across to him on the final climb, confirming that he was relying on the radio messages for his team that didn’t inform him of the quickly approaching Spaniard.
“I was just really surprised on the top. He flew past me like a rocket. I was not expecting it because I heard on the radio that I was leading by, I don’t know, 40 seconds to the chasers, and there was no mention of Enric,” he said.
“So when he passed me, I was a little bit shocked, and I was sure he knew the downhill. Then I was just happy to be with him in the last 10km into the headwind, because I had no water and it was nice to have a companion with me.
“I knew that I could beat him in the sprint, but I still appreciated that he committed full, and I also committed full to the finish. Chapeau to him and it was a great race.”
How it unfolded
When everyone is expecting a breakaway stage to unfold in modern Grand Tours, it now almost guarantees an all-out, brutal fight to get into any potential move. And that is exactly what occurred in the opening salvo of stage 6 at this year’s Vuelta a España.
Climbing straight out of neutral, the approach to the first categorised climb, Puerto de la Serratella (14km at 3.8%), was characterised by attacks, and they continued onto the long but shallow ascent, with Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Alexey Lutsenko (NSN) making the most significant move.
However, with almost all of the 23 teams present interested in having representation, the pace was kept high all the way over the top of the climb, bringing back all early attackers in what was the most intense fight for the break so far in the 81st edition of La Vuelta.
It continued onto the Coll de la Bandereta (4.6km at 6.7%), but no group was able to actually gain an advantage until the race had crested the summit, with four riders attacking away: George Bennett (NSN), Gijs Leemreize (Picnic PostNL), Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility), and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious).
Barely eking out a lead of more than 20 seconds on the roads through the Valencia region, with 100km to go on the stage, a strong chasing group of 12 quickly pulled off the front of the peloton and soon bridged across.
It was made up of Carlos Canal (Movistar), Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), Tom Gloag (Pinarello Q36.5), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek), Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Gianmarco Garofoli (Soudal-QuickStep), Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education-EasyPost), Hannes Wilksch (Tudor), José Manuel Díaz (Burgos Burpellet BH), Lars Craps (Lotto Intermarché), and Ukro Berrade (Kern Pharma), forming a group 16 in the lead.
Action was far from done in this middle phase of the stage, though, with a series of splits in the peloton seeing race leader Pogačar getting himself into a leading chase group with the likes of white jersey Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos), and only one teammate in Jay Vine.
However, these splits came to nothing with a long valley road separating the race from the second climb on the 177.5km route to the next one. Soon, the race settled into a holding pattern with UAE Team Emirates-XRG working to try and win the stage behind the 16 escapees.
UAE chase down the breakaway on final two climbs
Van Aert took the maximum haul of points at the intermediate sprint in Benicàssim, moving him up to second in the green jersey classification behind Pogačar, and this effort led the breakaway onto the penultimate climb, Desierto de las Palmas (7.6km at 4.9%), where the Belgian pulled the pin on his effort.
With the numeric advantage and likely strongest climber in the break, Bahrain Victorious came to the front with Bilbao, who set a hard tempo for Buitrago to try and give the Colombian a chance at the win, briefly extending the break’s advantage to near three minutes.
Heading downhill, it didn’t take long for UAE to reduce this down to 2:10, with last year’s Vuelta runner-up João Almeida and Kevin Vermaerke put to work to try and keep the deficit small enough before the final ascent, Puerto El Bartolo (9.4km at 7.1%).
Still in control, UAE led the peloton onto the final climb with just 1:30 still to make up on the narrow uphill roads and a crucial 1900 metre section of gravel leading to the summit.
One by one, UAE’s domestiques finished their pulls, with each one bringing the race closer to the inevitable. A huge pull from Vine dropped several riders, and it was a final kick from young talent Pablo Torres that acted as the last lead-out.
Debruyne led the break off the main road and onto the narrow new tarmac which preceded the gravel, but the red jersey was coming, and coming at a rapid rate of knots.
Pogačar makes his move
Having surveyed the group and sprayed himself down with a bottle of water, Pogačar just squeezed with an acceleration in the saddle, dropping several riders but not going all out yet for victory.
Only stuck to his wheel, with Roglič, Carapaz and Mas following in tow, with Gall being the big name off the pace of the main man. Soon though, it was only Onley within touching distance, and the Scot couldn’t hold on for much longer, also losing the wheel with 24km to go.
Pogačar picked off the breakaway riders one by one, with Debruyne and Kron the last men standing and first to reach the dusty gravel roads. Both would’ve seen little more than a red flash as the race leader scorched by them, though and with 23km to go, Pogačar was in the lead and all alone.
The GC podium hopefuls started attacking each other behind the race leader, with Mas looking the strongest but Roglič and Gall also moving nicely over the gravel. At the same time, Onley started to pay for trying to follow Pogačar’s initial move – he would crack and never catch back up to his rivals.
Mas ploughed on so well that after finishing the gravel sector and racing into the final kick before the descent off the final climb, he had Pogačar in his sights and made contact in no time, even coming around the red jersey just before the KOM point in a show of strength.
Aside from a near-crash for the race leader on the downhill, the pair worked well together in the lead to hold off all of the chasers, even into a headwind, but just as was the case at Il Lombardia in 2022, Mas was no match for Pogačar in the sprint á deux.
Debruyne’s great day in the breakaway ended with him taking third and moving up to eighth overall as he led home the group of most of the podium chasers, with Onley and Kuss missing out.

After what looked nailed on to be approaching another Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) solo exhibition, stage 6 of the Vuelta a España saw the race leader show rare weakness as he was chased down after attacking. He was forced to battle out the victory in a two-up sprint with a rejuvenated Enric Mas (Movistar).
Pogačar still emerged victorious in Castelló after a brutal day of all-out racing, but the sight of the red jersey being pulled back and briefly overtaken is perhaps the shock of the 2026 race so far, with his air on invincibility being challenged.
After all his struggles in recent seasons, the former four-time Vuelta podium finisher Mas showed signs of his previous best as he bridged across on the 1.9km of gravel on the final climb, before taking second on the stage and moving up to second overall.
Pogačar avoided complete disaster on the final downhill run to the line after overshooting a corner and being forced to go off-road, before managing not to crash and rejoining with Mas.
He didn’t have it all his own way, but when the line arrived, Pogačar completed the hat-trick, matching his haul of stage wins from his Grand Tour debut seven years ago in just six stages.
Mas’ top performance and full commitment with Pogačar in the final 10km saw him gain 52 seconds on the likes of Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who is now in third, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM).
The big losers in the fight for the podium were Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) and Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), who lost 1:38 to Mas. They both dropped to more than five minutes down on Pogačar, who extended his lead over Mas in second to 3:34 thanks to the 10 bonus seconds on the line.

“We had a plan to let the breakaway go today, but it took nearly two hours to form, so in the end, we had to pull less than half a stage to control,” said Pogačar as he explained why UAE went for the stage.
“João and Kevin did a great job to keep it together, and then I could go for the stage with Pavel, Jay and Pablo leading me out on the climb and setting me up for a perfect attack.
Pogačar also shed light on his total surprise at Mas bridging across to him on the final climb, confirming that he was relying on the radio messages for his team that didn’t inform him of the quickly approaching Spaniard.
“I was just really surprised on the top. He flew past me like a rocket. I was not expecting it because I heard on the radio that I was leading by, I don’t know, 40 seconds to the chasers, and there was no mention of Enric,” he said.
“So when he passed me, I was a little bit shocked, and I was sure he knew the downhill. Then I was just happy to be with him in the last 10km into the headwind, because I had no water and it was nice to have a companion with me.
“I knew that I could beat him in the sprint, but I still appreciated that he committed full, and I also committed full to the finish. Chapeau to him and it was a great race.”
How it unfolded
When everyone is expecting a breakaway stage to unfold in modern Grand Tours, it now almost guarantees an all-out, brutal fight to get into any potential move. And that is exactly what occurred in the opening salvo of stage 6 at this year’s Vuelta a España.
Climbing straight out of neutral, the approach to the first categorised climb, Puerto de la Serratella (14km at 3.8%), was characterised by attacks, and they continued onto the long but shallow ascent, with Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Alexey Lutsenko (NSN) making the most significant move.
However, with almost all of the 23 teams present interested in having representation, the pace was kept high all the way over the top of the climb, bringing back all early attackers in what was the most intense fight for the break so far in the 81st edition of La Vuelta.
It continued onto the Coll de la Bandereta (4.6km at 6.7%), but no group was able to actually gain an advantage until the race had crested the summit, with four riders attacking away: George Bennett (NSN), Gijs Leemreize (Picnic PostNL), Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility), and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious).
Barely eking out a lead of more than 20 seconds on the roads through the Valencia region, with 100km to go on the stage, a strong chasing group of 12 quickly pulled off the front of the peloton and soon bridged across.
It was made up of Carlos Canal (Movistar), Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), Tom Gloag (Pinarello Q36.5), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek), Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Gianmarco Garofoli (Soudal-QuickStep), Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education-EasyPost), Hannes Wilksch (Tudor), José Manuel Díaz (Burgos Burpellet BH), Lars Craps (Lotto Intermarché), and Ukro Berrade (Kern Pharma), forming a group 16 in the lead.
Action was far from done in this middle phase of the stage, though, with a series of splits in the peloton seeing race leader Pogačar getting himself into a leading chase group with the likes of white jersey Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos), and only one teammate in Jay Vine.
However, these splits came to nothing with a long valley road separating the race from the second climb on the 177.5km route to the next one. Soon, the race settled into a holding pattern with UAE Team Emirates-XRG working to try and win the stage behind the 16 escapees.
UAE chase down the breakaway on final two climbs
Van Aert took the maximum haul of points at the intermediate sprint in Benicàssim, moving him up to second in the green jersey classification behind Pogačar, and this effort led the breakaway onto the penultimate climb, Desierto de las Palmas (7.6km at 4.9%), where the Belgian pulled the pin on his effort.
With the numeric advantage and likely strongest climber in the break, Bahrain Victorious came to the front with Bilbao, who set a hard tempo for Buitrago to try and give the Colombian a chance at the win, briefly extending the break’s advantage to near three minutes.
Heading downhill, it didn’t take long for UAE to reduce this down to 2:10, with last year’s Vuelta runner-up João Almeida and Kevin Vermaerke put to work to try and keep the deficit small enough before the final ascent, Puerto El Bartolo (9.4km at 7.1%).
Still in control, UAE led the peloton onto the final climb with just 1:30 still to make up on the narrow uphill roads and a crucial 1900 metre section of gravel leading to the summit.
One by one, UAE’s domestiques finished their pulls, with each one bringing the race closer to the inevitable. A huge pull from Vine dropped several riders, and it was a final kick from young talent Pablo Torres that acted as the last lead-out.
Debruyne led the break off the main road and onto the narrow new tarmac which preceded the gravel, but the red jersey was coming, and coming at a rapid rate of knots.
Pogačar makes his move
Having surveyed the group and sprayed himself down with a bottle of water, Pogačar just squeezed with an acceleration in the saddle, dropping several riders but not going all out yet for victory.
Only stuck to his wheel, with Roglič, Carapaz and Mas following in tow, with Gall being the big name off the pace of the main man. Soon though, it was only Onley within touching distance, and the Scot couldn’t hold on for much longer, also losing the wheel with 24km to go.
Pogačar picked off the breakaway riders one by one, with Debruyne and Kron the last men standing and first to reach the dusty gravel roads. Both would’ve seen little more than a red flash as the race leader scorched by them, though and with 23km to go, Pogačar was in the lead and all alone.
The GC podium hopefuls started attacking each other behind the race leader, with Mas looking the strongest but Roglič and Gall also moving nicely over the gravel. At the same time, Onley started to pay for trying to follow Pogačar’s initial move – he would crack and never catch back up to his rivals.
Mas ploughed on so well that after finishing the gravel sector and racing into the final kick before the descent off the final climb, he had Pogačar in his sights and made contact in no time, even coming around the red jersey just before the KOM point in a show of strength.
Aside from a near-crash for the race leader on the downhill, the pair worked well together in the lead to hold off all of the chasers, even into a headwind, but just as was the case at Il Lombardia in 2022, Mas was no match for Pogačar in the sprint á deux.
Debruyne’s great day in the breakaway ended with him taking third and moving up to eighth overall as he led home the group of most of the podium chasers, with Onley and Kuss missing out.
