Enes Kanter Freedom has spent weeks pushing the WNBA into an uncomfortable debate over transgender eligibility. Now, after an ejection in Chicago and an arena ban, he says he wants to change the setting entirely.

Rather than another courtside confrontation, Freedom is proposing what he calls a “peace summit” with league leadership, with Caitlyn Jenner serving as moderator.

The former NBA center laid out the idea in an interview with Benny Johnson, saying he would be willing to sit down with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and other league officials if they were open to it.

“I think if, you know, if the NBA and the task force, and obviously, the commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, are okay with it, I am offering them a peace summit that is moderated by one of the best female athletes ever, Caitlyn Jenner,” Freedom said.

“I think she’ll be the best person to understand what’s going on and moderate the whole thing.”

Jenner has already agreed to help

According to Freedom, the proposal isn’t purely hypothetical.

He said he had already spoken with Jenner, the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion who later came out as transgender, and claimed she was willing to get involved.

“I actually had a conversation with her last night,” Freedom said. “She said, ‘Listen, I love what you’re doing, just whatever you’re doing, just count me in. I will do anything to help it.’

“I was like, ‘Listen, we might offer them a peace summit. Would you be okay to moderate it?’ She said, ‘Amen.’”

Jenner has previously backed a biological-sex standard for women’s sports, saying the WNBA should adopt a simple rule: “XX, you’re in; XY, you’re out.”

There are currently no transgender women playing in the WNBA, but the issue has become a major flashpoint around the league.

Chicago incident still hangs over proposal

The timing of Freedom’s offer is notable. He was recently removed from Wintrust Arena after a heated exchange involving Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud. 

The Sky later banned him from home games, while the WNBA itself stopped short of imposing a league-wide ban.

That episode intensified criticism of Freedom, with some accusing him of deliberately seeking confrontation rather than policy discussion. He’s now trying to present a different image.

“I’m a peacemaker,” Freedom said. “I don’t want to cause any trouble, you know? People obviously might get the wrong idea because of some of the things they might see on the internet.”

Whether the WNBA has any interest in accepting the proposed summit remains unclear. What has changed is Freedom’s approach. 

After weeks of public provocation and controversy, he’s now pitching a formal discussion, with Jenner positioned as the person he believes could bridge the divide.
