Deion Sanders has spent years defending his son against outside criticism, but this time he did not need a long answer to make his position clear.

After the Cleveland Browns named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback, the Colorado coach was asked about Shedeur Sanders and offered a response that immediately sounded loaded.

“We all know what’s transpiring with Shedeur; we all know he’s playing extremely well,” Sanders told reporters Wednesday.

That was it. No direct attack on head coach Todd Monken, no accusation that Cleveland had made the wrong call, and no public demand that his son should be starting.

Still, the implication was obvious as Deion Sanders believes the situation speaks for itself.

Shedeur forced his way into conversation

The decision came after Shedeur Sanders spent the offseason pushing himself back into serious contention.

He entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2025 and began his rookie season behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel before eventually climbing the depth chart and finishing the year as Cleveland’s starter.

His rookie numbers were mixed. Sanders threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions while going 3-4 as a starter. This summer, however, his progress became harder to ignore.

Training-camp numbers included in the supplied reporting showed Sanders completing 228 of 327 passes with 19 touchdowns and four interceptions. Watson, meanwhile, went 227 of 345 with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

That difference helped fuel the belief among some fans and analysts that Sanders had done enough to earn the job.

Huge contract impossible to ignore

The debate has inevitably circled back to Watson’s fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract.

Former Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III said he believes that deal explains the decision.

“There are $230 million reasons why Deshaun Watson is the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns,” Griffin said. “Why is he starting? $230 million reasons.”

Watson also enters the season with an uneasy relationship with the fan base after being booed during the preseason and later criticizing Browns supporters before apologizing. ESPN’s Kevin Clark was especially critical of the decision.

“The Browns fans have seen a lot of bad quarterback play, and even in that context, he’s among the worst,” Clark said. “For the starting job, I would have gone Shedeur first.”

Deion Sanders may know this isn’t over. The most important point is that Watson winning Week 1 does not necessarily end the story.

Cleveland’s quarterback situation has changed repeatedly in recent seasons, and Shedeur Sanders has already shown he can move up the depth chart when opportunities appear.

That may explain why Deion Sanders kept his reaction brief. He didn’t need to say Cleveland got it wrong. He only needed to remind everyone that, in his view, they’ve already seen enough to judge what happened.
