The late bike-to-board guru Stratton Matteson had stoke for snowboarding like no other. His motivation was unreal. He would bike 40 miles to a trailhead, hike more miles up a volcano, set up camp, shred it for the next few days—all day, every day—then bike dozens of miles back home, no automobiles to taint his human powered-missions. At 28 years old, he was already a legend.
But in February 2026, the Bend, Oregon pro splitboarding young legend had his life taken in an avalanche in B.C. It sent ripples throughout the backcountry community. One of the most dedicated persons to his craft had passed on, all too soon. Heartbreak echoed throughout the mountains near and far.
“SUCCESSION” is a tribute film by his friend and fellow splitboarder Tyndall Wells. It follows a human-powered mission with Matteson and friends to the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming in spring 2025 where they camped out and shredded gnarly lines, classic Stratton-style. The film does a wonderful job showing just who Stratton Matteson was without many words. Enjoy.
