The idea is relatively simple: instead of repeatedly pushing yourself to your maximum, you maintain a consistent effort that allows your aerobic energy system to do most of the work.

Of the five heart rate training zones, SSC falls into Zone 2, which is why Zone 2 is a common term for this type of training. At this intensity, your body can continue exercising for a long time without the dramatic fatigue associated with high-intensity efforts.
As a general guideline, Zone 2 is most commonly defined as roughly 60 to 70 percent of maximum heart rate. The exact heart rate range varies from person to person, which is why simply plugging your age into a formula isn’t always the most accurate way to determine your Zone 2. Your actual Zone 2 can be higher or lower depending on your fitness level, genetics, training history, and how your maximum heart rate is determined.

Whether you’re chasing 125,000 vertical feet in a day or simply trying to keep up with your kids, SSC can help you make the most of a full day on the mountain.
It Helps You Recover Both On and Off the Mountain
Skiing isn’t a steady-state activity in itself. Steep pitches, moguls, trees, and powder require intense bursts of effort, followed by recovery on the chairlift or easier terrain. A strong aerobic system helps your body recover between those efforts, allowing you to ski hard, recover faster, and do it again throughout the day.
SSC can also be an excellent option on recovery days because it gets you moving without adding the same stress as another high-intensity workout. It allows your muscles and nervous system to recover from harder training sessions as well as assist in maintaining your aerobic conditioning without interfering with the recovery needed to build strength and power. It can also help with muscle soreness.


It Helps Manage Weight and Burn Fat
For skiers and snowboarders, maintaining a healthy body weight can make moving around the mountain easier, reduce the energy required for every turn and climb, and help you stay fresher during long days on the slopes. Whether you carry a lot of extra weight or are trying to make your abs pop, a little fat loss (and muscle gain) is always a good thing.
SSC can be a useful tool for managing body weight and supporting fat loss, especially because it can be performed regularly without the recovery demands of high-intensity training. Zone 2 is considered the fat-burning zone, and while no single form of exercise guarantees fat loss, consistent aerobic activity increases energy expenditure and can help create the calorie deficit needed to lose excess body fat.
How to Find and Measure Your Zone 2 Heart Rate
There are several ways to estimate your Zone 2 heart rate, but it’s important to understand that heart rate formulas are estimates, not precise measurements.
First, you will want to estimate your maximum heart rate using the following formula:
220 minus your age = estimated maximum heart rate
From there, you can calculate roughly 60 to 70 percent of that number as a general Zone 2 range. For example, a 40-year-old person using that formula would have an estimated maximum heart rate of 180 beats per minute. Sixty to 70 percent would put their estimated Zone 2 heart rate between approximately 108 and 126 beats per minute. However, that number shouldn’t be treated as gospel. Two people of the same age can have significantly different maximum heart rates depending on their fitness level and other factors.
There are a number of ways to measure your heart rate to determine what training zone you are in.
Heart rate monitors can be convenient and valuable, but can also vary in accuracy, particularly wrist-based monitors during certain activities.
Another way is to feel your heart rate, either on your neck or wrist, and count the beats for six seconds while watching a timer. Multiply this number by 10 to get your heart rate. To be a bit more accurate, count the beats for 10 seconds and multiply that number by six.


There’s also a remarkably simple way to determine whether you’re likely in Zone 2: the talk test. During an SSC workout, you should be able to speak in short, complete sentences. You should be breathing noticeably harder than you would while sitting on the couch, but you shouldn’t be gasping for air. If you can carry on a conversation using short sentences but wouldn’t want to deliver a speech or sing a song, you’re probably around the right intensity.
What Activities Can You Do for SSC?
The good news is that almost any rhythmic cardiovascular activity can become SSC training if you maintain the appropriate intensity.
Cycling is an excellent option for skiers because it provides a low-impact way to build aerobic fitness while spending time outdoors. Road cycling, mountain biking, stationary bikes, and spin bikes can all work. Electric bikes can be particularly helpful for keeping your heart rate in Zone 2 because you can adjust the pedal assist to make sure you don’t exert too much energy and spike your heart rate too high.
Hiking is another great choice, particularly for mountain athletes. Hiking uphill adds some muscular endurance while increasing your heart rate. Just adjust your pace so that you remain in your target zone. Brisk walking may be all you need, but a slight incline could be required to elevate the heart rate enough. Jogging and trail running are also effective options for people who enjoy running. Just remember that the goal is aerobic conditioning, not setting a personal recored. Slow down if necessary.
Ultimately, any activity can be modified or intensified to achieve an SSC workout. I love basketball, so shooting hoops in the backyard while moving the entire time is great for me. You can also modify your HIIT workouts to keep your heart rate in Zone 2, hustle through your round of disc golf, or even use yoga with a fast flow. The possibilities are endless. Just aim for 30 to 45 minutes per workout a couple of times a week. As your fitness improves, you can gradually increase the duration.


Strength Training Is Still King
While SSC is valuable for building endurance, it shouldn’t overshadow strength training and a balanced fitness plan, which are more important for preparing skiers and snowboarders for the demands of the mountain. Skiing and snowboarding require strength to absorb and control terrain, power to make quick movements, and endurance to keep going throughout a long day.
A solid training program should combine strength training, cardio, power, plyometrics, mobility, flexibility, and balance work to prepare your body for the wide range of demands you’ll encounter on the mountain.
There are also plenty of other activities that can complement your training, including yoga, Pilates, and other forms of movement. The goal isn’t to become great at one type of exercise, but to build a well-rounded body that is strong, powerful, mobile, and resilient. SSC can be an important piece of the puzzle, but it works best as part of a balanced fitness program that helps you ski stronger, move better, and stay healthy throughout the season.
SSC isn’t a magic bullet, and it certainly shouldn’t replace a well-rounded fitness routine of strength training, power work, mobility, or other forms of conditioning. Instead, think of SSC as another tool in your ski fitness toolbox, helping build the aerobic foundation that allows you to recover faster, manage fatigue, and make the most of long days on the mountain.
