Lando Norris addresses F1 title chances after Zandvoort victory
Lando Norris is back in the Formula 1 title picture after scoring back-to-back victories.
Lando Norris offered his verdict on his Formula 1 championship chances after scoring his second victory in succession at the Dutch Grand Prix.
McLaren has seen an upturn in results after introducing its major aerodynamic upgrade package, with reigning champion Norris taking full advantage to get his title defence back on track.
Last year, Max Verstappen battled back from a deficit of over 100 points to narrowly miss out on a fifth crown. Now just 83 points back on leader Kimi Antonelli and the lead driver in terms of form, Norris maintains that he is not thinking about taking a second title.
“It sounds boring, but one race at a time,” he said.
“I know a lot of people say it now, but it’s the truth of it. There’s no point thinking that far ahead. I need to concentrate now on having a nice little break.
“Obviously two great weekends, but we just need to reset, to learn as much as we can. I think there are still plenty of things we can do better, and we need to do better if we want to fight for a Championship.
“So, I’m very pleased with the team. I’m pleased with how much work everyone’s doing, and so happy that I can deliver it for them and bring two wins in a row.
“But it’s harder than I would like, and I want bigger gaps, so we have to keep working hard. There’s still plenty of races, plenty of opportunity for everyone. So keep my head down, keep working, and they’ll keep coming.”
Norris was forced to work for his victory on Sunday. Starting from pole position, he was passed by Antonelli following a red flag restart, but the Briton always appeared to have pace on hand, which became more evident after he established a tyre delta over the Mercedes driver.
However, only he and George Russell did not pit under a late virtual safety car, handing Antonelli a theoretical advantage. However, Norris was able to maintain his pace on older tyres, and was free to cruise to the line.
“A good race, well fought,” he added. “Probably one of my better wins.
“We had to fight for it well, but the pace was very strong. I managed things incredibly well today. So I’m over the moon; very, very happy, and it’s nice to win the final race here in Zandvoort.”
