Selwyn Snow Resort, Australia, Closes Early After Rain Ends 2026 Season

Selwyn Snow Resort in New South Wales, Australia, has closed for the remainder of the 2026 ski season, becoming the second Australian ski resort to end its season early after warm temperatures and rain eroded the country’s already fragile snowpack. The decision comes just one day after Victoria’s Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort announced it will wrap up its 2026 lift operations following a 57-day season.

Selwyn had hoped to reopen this weekend after temporarily closing following heavy rain on Thursday. However, the cold temperatures needed to rebuild its snowpack through snowmaking failed to arrive. “Following Thursday’s rain and the impact on our remaining snow cover, our Mountain Team worked tirelessly to give us every possible chance of reopening,” the resort announced. “Unfortunately, the snowmaking temperatures we needed didn’t arrive, and the time has come to call it a season.” The closure marks the first NSW resort to close for the 2026 season, which has seen below average snowfalls across Australian resorts.

Selwyn has been facing several difficult years after being destroyed during the devastating Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20. The resort had to be rebuilt entirely and construction was delayed due to COVID. When the resort was slated to reopen in 2022, early snowfall prevented teams from finishing electric wiring, forcing the resort to remain shut despite  excellent snow conditions. Two below-average Australian ski seasons followed in 2023 and 2024, depriving Selwyn of the opportunity to enjoy a full winter. Thankfully, the 2025 season was stronger, giving the resort the opportunity to shine. The poor 2026 season has been a setback for the small resort, bringing the season to an early finish.

Selwyn thanked skiers, snowboarders, families and staff for supporting the resort throughout the winter. “Whether it was your first day on snow, a family trip, a lesson, tobogganing or a hot chocolate in the Selwyn Centre — thank you for choosing Selwyn,” the resort said.

The Selwyn Centre will remain open this weekend for food and beverages, giving visitors one final chance to visit the resort before winter operations end.

Guests with unused Ticket Mania and Black Friday vouchers, as well as those with bookings for the remainder of the season, have been contacted directly by Selwyn. The resort advised guests to check the email address associated with their booking or purchase.

Despite the early end to the season, Selwyn says there is plenty to look forward to in 2027. The resort has confirmed that “significant and exciting upgrades” to its snowmaking infrastructure are planned for next season. The investment could prove particularly important as Australian resorts contend with increasingly variable winter conditions and the need to make the most of limited cold periods. “We may be saying goodbye to winter a little earlier than we hoped, but there’s plenty to look forward to,” Selwyn said. “See you in 2027!”
