‘Horizon 3’ won’t be coming out any time soon

Guerrilla Games is reportedly focusing on rebooting spin-off title ‘Horizon Hunters Gathering’

Fans face a hefty wait for a direct sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn and 2022’s Horizon Forbidden West, according to a new report.

Progress on the third game in the Horizon series, which is currently untitled, is said to be moving at a somewhat glacial pace because Guerrilla Games is reportedly focusing on rebooting Horizon Hunters Gathering, its upcoming spin-off title.

Bloomberg reports that Horizon Hunters Gathering, which doesn’t have a release date yet, is undergoing a comprehensive “overhauling” process following negative testing.

“Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year,” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier writes, “the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope.”

And because Guerrilla has poured the lion’s share of its resources into overhauling the spinoff, there is currently only a “tiny team” working on Horizon 3, which is said to be “years away from completion”.

In the meantime, Sony’s live-action film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn has been pencilled in for a 2027 release.

Back in 2022, Sony confirmed it was working with Netflix on a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with The Umbrella Academy’s Steve Blackman set to lead the series.

However, those plans fell through in 2024 after Blackman was accused of “toxic, bullying” behaviour in a report by Rolling Stone. “These allegations from a handful of disgruntled employees are completely false and outrageous,”  Blackman responded, via a representative.

Subsequently, in January 2025, Sony announced it was pivoting to a live-action Horizon Zero Dawn movie. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,” head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash said at the time.
