Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen’s ’10 Things I Hate About You’ Musical to Debut on Broadway in 2027
The original 1999 film launched the careers of Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles
Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen’s musical adaptation of the movie 10 Things I Hate About You is scheduled to hit Broadway in 2027.

The creator of TV hit Girls and the ‘Cut To The Feeling’ singer will collaborate on the project, a musical reimagining of the 1999 film that starred Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. The movie was a loose adaptation of the William Shakespeare play The Taming Of The Shrew. Dunham will co-write the production’s book with Jessica Huang, while Jepsen will write the songs alongside Ethan Gruska.
Variety reports that the show will begin preview performances from August 17, 2027. Details on casting and what theatre will house the show are yet to be announced. The logline for the musical calls it a “rebellious” musical about “growing up, discovering yourself, and refusing to live by others’ expectations. Amid the crushes, cliques and teenage angst, two sisters set out to define themselves on their own terms.”

Set in a contemporary high school, 10 Things I Hate About You follows a new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls in love with his classmate Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). However, her strict father forbids her from dating until her antisocial older sister Kat (Stiles) does. To solve the issue, Cameron enlists school “bad boy” Patrick (Ledger) to seduce her. However, what starts as a scheme soon turns into romance.
The movie propelled Stiles, Gordon-Levitt, and Ledger into stardom. Stiles would go on to star in movies such as Save The Last Dance and the Bourne franchise, while Gordon-Levitt is best known for movies such as 500 Days Of Summer, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception. Ledger won an Academy Award for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight, released months after his death in January 2008, aged 28.
Recently, Lena Dunham revealed in her recent memoir that she felt “like a ghost” while dating Jack Antonoff, while seemingly referencing his relationship with a “teen pop star” rumoured to be Lorde.
