19-Year-Old Development Racer Finlay Tarling Dies in Crash at Volta a Portugal

British cyclist Finlay Tarling died Friday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a crash in the Volta a Portugal. He was 19.

Reports from Portuguese outlet RTP indicate Tarling collided with a vehicle not associated with the race that entered the course against traffic while Tarling was near the back of the race on stage 8 today.

In a statement, race organizers described it as a “serious incident” but have not provided more details at this time. They added that they will provide updates “as circumstances allow.”

Race organizers and Tarling’s NSN Development Team released statements confirming his passing.

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” the team statement said. “Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.

“Rest in peace, Fin.”

“At this time of profound sorrow, the organizers of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extend their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, the NSN Development Team, and all his friends and loved ones,” read a statement from the race organizers.

The race was suspended with about 20km remaining, and award ceremonies were canceled.

Tarling was an up and coming racer for the NSN Development Team. The brother of Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh Tarling, he came from a talented cycling family.

Tarling was in the first of a two-year contract with NSN, and had posted a number of promising results, including third in the U23 individual time trial at the Great Britain national championships.
