They had previously played it in jams on stage, including in a shortened rendition at South Korea’s Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival back in August 2023, but this was the first outing for it in its finished form.

Elsewhere in the Summer Sonic set, they played just two other songs from ‘Reality Awaits‘, in the form of ‘Going Shopping’ and ‘Dine N’Dash’, alongside classics such as ‘Reptilia’, ‘Last Nite’ and ‘Someday’.

‘Lonely In The Future’ is the third track on ‘Reality Awaits’, which was released last month and is the band’s first LP in six years and the follow-up to 2020’s ‘The New Abnormal‘.

NME gave the album four stars, writing: “Whether unleashing disses or getting deep into the weird and wonderful, a quarter of a century on from their debut, The Strokes sound more alive and locked in than they have in years.”

Last weekend, Charli XCX made a surprise appearance during the band’s Outside Lands set to perform ‘Take It Or Leave It’. Her album ‘Music, Fashion, Film‘ was released on the same day as ‘Reality Awaits’ and Julian Casablancas introduced her as “the queen of album sales”.

The Strokes play at the Osaka leg of Summer Sonic today (August 15) before continuing their ‘Reality Awaits’ world tour, which reaches the UK in October and includes two nights at London’s O2, followed by shows in Newcastle and Manchester. See all the dates here and find any remaining tickets here (UK/Europe), here (North America) and here (elsewhere).
