This New Zealand snow forecast brings a compact winter refresh from Saturday through Thursday, with Canterbury favored for as much as 25 cm while windier, denser snow reaches Ruapehu. The South Island turns colder behind the front, improving snow quality for Sunday and Monday, while strong winds could disrupt lift operations on Ruapehu. A second Southern Alps signal next weekend remains too inconsistent for a firm total.
The individual models converge on South Island snow starting Saturday morning and easing Sunday, with a few Canterbury flurries lingering into Thursday, and they agree that snow levels collapse as the front passes. They diverge on intensity around Canterbury and on the duration of the tail, while wind forecasts are close on modest flow in the Southern Lakes but spread toward 60-70 km/h gusts on exposed Canterbury terrain. Snow levels begin around 1,200-1,700 meters during precipitation before dropping below 500 meters by Sunday. Mt. Hutt and Porters should collect 13-25 cm, with Mount Dobson at 11-15 cm; 10-16:1 SLRs support moderate to increasingly light snow, especially late in the storm.
On Ruapehu, the individual models converge on a Sunday onset and a snow level falling from near 2,000 meters to below 1,000 meters, but diverge sharply on snowfall intensity and whether showers end Monday or linger into Wednesday. Wind forecasts converge on a disruptive period, although peak estimates vary, with exposed gusts potentially reaching 100-115 km/h. Turoa is favored for 12-19 cm, while Whakapapa receives 6-10 cm. Ratios around 6-11:1 mean dense, wind-affected snow. Whakapapa currently has only Happy Valley and Rangatira lift-served terrain open, so new snow may improve coverage while upper-mountain access remains limited.
Confidence is strongest from the start of Saturday, August 15, through noon Thursday, August 20. From Friday, August 21, into early Monday, August 24, the individual models diverge on timing, intensity, snow levels, and wind impacts for another possible Southern Alps system. A conservative outcome would be about 5-15 cm on favored terrain, but the GFS is a notably wetter outlier while other solutions produce little snow. That spread makes another refresh plausible, not dependable, and the details should remain broad until the signal stabilizes.
