A number of classic songs from across the Pokémon series have been reworked for a new emo covers album.

Last year, multi-instrumentalist Tune In With Chewie released an album that took classic The Legend Of Zelda themes and reimagined them as midwest emo songs. 

For their next project, Tune In With Chewie has taken a number of fan-favourite tracks from across the various Pokémon soundtracks and reworked them as emo instrumental songs, inspired by Jimmy Eat World, Mineral and American Football.

“Built around heartfelt guitar performances recorded across a range of alternate tunings, ‘Poké Emo’ gives familiar themes a sound that is equal parts nostalgic and cathartic,” explains a press release. For the record, Chewie reharmonised many of the arrangements and the album is “dotted with deep cuts for the genre faithful: the ‘Pokémon Theme’ intro takes its chord progression from Sunny Day Real Estate’s ‘8’ and the trumpet threaded through ‘Jubilife Village’ is a direct nod to American Football.” The album artwork even includes a deliberate Mineral reference.

“Pokémon has been a series I’ve wanted to do an album on for a long time, but I just never got around to it,” said Tune In With Chewie. “After the success of ‘Zelda’s Midwest Emo Mixtape’, I knew I wanted to do Pokémon in this style. I love this style of music and always have. I grew up listening to a lot of Midwest emo like Mineral, American Football and Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as 2000s emo like My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World and Thursday. I even sprinkled in some math rock, something I didn’t really get to do much of on the Zelda album.”

Earlier this year Jason Paige, the singer behind the iconic Pokémon anime theme tune, shared a brand new song in honour of the 10th anniversary of Pokémon Go.

In other news, an updated version of Xbox 360 classic The Lord Of The Rings: War In The North has been surprise-released – with more remasters on the way.
