Skiers and snowboarders at Ohau Snowfields are celebrating arrival of a special and unique classification of snow; spackle.

Spackle snow is far from powder snow. But spackle just so happens to work a treat when it comes to skiing or snowboarding at Ohau, New Zealand.

The forecast called for snotty cloud, low wind, and likely precipitation. Any snow would arrive as a special, heavy layer capable of gentling the sharks beneath a coating sweet, sweet spackle.

Wet weather gear is helpful in a spackle storm. Falling snow sticks to everything, people included.

A solid knowledge of Ohau terrain also is rather handy. One of the many elements to make spackle special is that it’s usually skied somewhat blind.

Most if not all of the epic terrain at Ohau was very much ripe to be skied(so long as you don’t mind periodic zero viz)

Consistency of the snowpack was an especially creamy spread. The spackle snow did well to work the legs, cushion the line, and make for truly special day of riding that seems thankfully local to Ohau Snowfields.

And again, as is often the case, the spackle storm at Ohau was, by and large, a special sort of downhill party where everybody knew everybody and nobody had a care in the world.
