The team behind God Of War have confirmed that new spin-off game Laufey will launch next year, and will be followed by a sequel starring Kratos.

Set in the same time period as the 2018 God Of War reboot, Laufey will star Kratos’ wife exploring the afterlife following her death at the start of that game.

“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk,” reads an official description of the game. “To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”

Last month, game developers Santa Monica Studios confirmed that God Of War: Laufey would be released before January 2028 and the end of first-party physical PlayStation discs. Over the weekend, a special God Of War panel was held at Comic Con San Diego which included a release date reveal – God Of War: Laufey will be available for PlayStation 5 from February 16, 2027 (via IGN).

God Of War boss Cory Barlog also confirmed a Kratos-starring sequel to both Laufey and 2022’s Ragnarok will follow the spin-off. No further details about the project were shared. “While [God Of War: Laufey] is a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore [with] all these different characters in there,” explained studio boss Cory Barlog in an interview in June. “But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”

Earlier this month, Laufey actress Deborah Ann Woll responded to the backlash she’s received from some fans about Kratos’ absence from the new God Of War game. “Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it,” she told a fan at a convention. “But one, I’m not on social media so that helps. And two, I feel totally unbothered because I know it’s great. It’s fine if it’s not your cup of tea but in no universe is it bad.”

In other news, the God Of War adaptation is in trouble after Kratos actor Ryan Hurst suffered an on-set injury that means the role will now need to be recast.
