It should have happened in March, but fans will finally get to watch Argentina take on Spain this Sunday, in a game with much higher stakes. The FIFA World Cup trophy is on the line, with Argentina looking to add a fourth star, while Spain wants to add a second.

The unavoidable storyline that has already dominated the media space is Lionel Messi facing off against Lamine Yamal. Yamal is half of Messi’s age, and has become his successor at FC Barcelona, the club that Messi has long adored and became a legend at.

With Messi set to play against Yamal, an iconic photo of the two has once again resurfaced. Back in 2007, when Messi was 20 years old and Yamal was merely a toddler, the two took a photo together for a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot. Messi bathed a six-month old Yamal, long before anyone could have possibly envisioned life playing out like it did.

Of course, Messi and Yamal know all about the picture. On Friday, Messi expanded a bit on the “craziness” of the photo, and how much he appreciates Yamal as a player.

Lamine is a great player that I follow a lot because he plays at a club I love and always wish and want the best for. He’s one of the most important players in the world at 19 years old… The truth is that photo is a craziness. That’s life. I took that photo when he was a baby, and today we’re both facing each other in a World Cup. Truthfully, what I’m saying is crazy. 

On Sunday, either Messi will add a second World Cup trophy to his resume or Yamal will match his idol in that regard. Either way, the similarities between the two are stunning.
