The medical updates have been flowing since the end of stage 12 of the Tour de France, given the large number of riders caught up in the crash that marred the final kilometre of the sprint stage.

The results for stage 12 didn’t reflect the magnitude of the damage, with riders involved handed the same time as the bunch because the fall near the front of the peloton occurred within 5km of the Chalon-sur-Saône line. However, some riders have already been marked down as non-starters for stage 13, having sustained injuries that make continuing out of the question.

The riders caught up in the high-speed crash, as they positioned to unfurl the final stages of the sprint at 350m from the line, came from several teams, though some, such as Lotto-Intermarché and Uno-X Mobility, had multiple involved.

It had been instantly clear, from the impact and aftermath, that not all those on the road would be lining up on Friday and among the early medical reports came the news from Caja Rural-Seguros RGA that key rider Fernándo Gaviria had broken his collarbone. That is also a fate that has befallen Lotto-Intermarché’s Jenno Berckmoes.

Others, such as Netcompany Ineos rider Dorian Godon, who fell heavily and was clearly struggling afterwards, have got through initial checks without immediately having to rule out being on the start line in Dole. Still, that’s not to say that the continued monitoring or the ongoing impact won’t later prevent them from continuing.

Team medical updates

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA – Fernando Gaviria

“Tests carried out immediately after the stage have confirmed initial suspicions. Fernando Gaviria must abandon the Tour de France due to a fracture in his left collarbone.

“The Colombian sprinter for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA suffered a heavy crash during the sprint of the twelfth stage after another rider cut him off as the race began. Gaviria went down, taking a hard impact that caused him intense pain in his left collarbone area.”

Lotto-Intermarché – Jenno Berckmoes and Liam Slock

“We’re gutted to see Jenno Berckmoes forced to leave the Tour de France. He crashed heavily during the sprint of stage 12 and unfortunately suffered a broken collarbone. He will undergo surgery in Belgium tomorrow.

“Liam Slock was also involved in the same crash. At first assessment, he mainly suffered abrasions to both elbows and his right hip. We hope he’ll recover well overnight, but he is expected to be able to continue in the Tour.”

Netcompany Ineos – Dorian Godon

“Dorian Godon crashed unavoidably, in the sprint of stage 12, after a rider fell in front of him. He has sustained skin abrasions and muscular back pain.

“Initial assessment by the Tour de France race doctor and subsequently our team doctor confirms no evidence of concussion and Dorian will now be closely monitored at least twice daily according to the UCI concussion guidance.”

Picnic PostNL – Pavel Bittner

“No easy days at the Tour … sadly, Pavel Bittner got caught in a big crash in the finale, ending the chance of any result today. For now he looks to be ok.”

UNO-X Mobility – Søren Wærenskjold, Jonas Abrahamsen and Anthon Charmig

“A crash in the final kilometre shaped the end of Stage 12, bringing down Søren Wærenskjold, Jonas Abrahamsen and Anthon Charmig before the sprint in Chalon-sur-Saône.

“All three sustained multiple cuts and abrasions. Initial examinations immediately after the stage did not identify any injuries requiring X-rays. They will continue to be monitored closely this evening, including concussion assessments where appropriate.”
