Vichy-Nevers: 161.3km, 1400m+
Attackers will of course attack on stage 11 of the Tour de France, but with such a flat course and with the three previous finishes in Nevers being settled in bunch sprints, it’s hard to see any other outcome on this day.
The peloton’s fastest riders will all try to follow Eric Leman, Guido Bontempi and Alessandro Petacchi into the history books, with sprinters such as Jasper Philipsen, Tim Merlier, Biniam Girmay and Mads Pedersen all dreaming of adding their name to that list.
There are some slight climbs, but the two category 4 ascents on offer won’t trouble the heavier riders and will make things very complicated for breakaway hopefuls.
As for the climbers, they will certainly have to wait for another chance. That’ll be a disappointment for Lenny Martinez, the uphill specialist with Bahrain-Victorious. He grew up in Nièvre, just 8km from Nevers, but the terrain doesn’t offer him the chance to land what would be his first Tour stage win.
That will have to wait until another day; for now, the gallopers have the best odds to fight for the victory.
