The chemical reaction has affected 17 people, four of them seriously, prompting the activation of the Procicat emergency plan for chemical risk.
A toxic cloud caused by a reaction between chemical products at the municipal swimming pool in La Bisbal del Penedès (Tarragona) on Friday prompted the confinement of residents and the activation of the Procicat plan for chemical risk.
Authorities urged residents to stay at home with doors and windows closed and to avoid going near the affected area.
The incident has affected 17 people, ten were taken to hospital, including five children. According to the Emergency Medical System (SEM), the others were treated at the scene and were able to be discharged as they only suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services received the alert at 14:12. Firefighters immediately evacuated the premises, set up a security perimeter and deployed several crews to bring the situation under control, while specialist teams began neutralising the chemical mixture and emptying the affected tanks.
Although the toxic cloud has gradually dispersed, the council is maintaining its recommendation of confinement as a precaution until intervention teams have completed the decontamination work.
For the time being, it is not yet known which products caused the chemical reaction.
