Courmayeur is preparing to undergo a huge transformation on its ski slopes, introducing a massive modernization project that aims to seamlessly blend Italian mountain tradition with cutting-edge transit technology. According to an infrastructure announcement released by Courmayeur Mont Blanc Funivie S.p.A. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the ski resort is injecting over €40 million into its lift network. The sweeping financial commitment will completely replace the aging Checrouit gondola and the Maison Vieille chairlift with two state-of-the-art lift systems. Beyond increasing transportation efficiency, the resort emphasizes that the overhaul focuses heavily on passenger comfort, localized accessibility, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Developed by Leitner, the new lift systems will trace the exact historic paths of the previous infrastructure while introducing heavily modernized features. Official architectural renderings reveal spacious, panoramic 10-person cabins designed with sound-dampening technology and optimized energy efficiency to ensure silent, eco-conscious travel across the slopes. The bright cabins will feature comfortable padded seating, smooth sliding doors for seamless boarding, and advanced stabilization systems to maintain maximum safety during high-alpine wind events. Once operational, the new Maison Vieille gondola will have an hourly capacity of 2,000 passengers with a brief four-minute travel time, while the adjacent Checrouit gondola will transport up to 2,200 people per hour on a smooth six-minute journey.

These upgrades are going to completely change how people move around the Checrouit side of the mountain. Beyond just getting riders up the slopes faster, the whole base area is getting a major facelift. Beginners are getting the biggest upgrade with the resort expanding the Maison Vieille learning zone and adding two brand-new magic carpet lifts. The project takes the stress out of those first few days on the snow and makes the entire mountain layout much more intuitive.
While the big debut is locked in for the 2026-2027 winter season, these lifts are built to be a year-round asset. Keeping the Maison Vieille gondola running through the summer is a game-changer for warm-weather traffic. It will drop riders right into the heart of the Courmayeur Mont Blanc Bike Area and give hikers a massive head start on world-class terrain. It makes everything from a casual family stroll down to Lake Checrouit to the sweeping, high-alpine views of the Val Veny Balcony on the Tour du Mont Blanc route feel much more accessible.
