It’s been a fickle start to winter in New Zealand. But conditions like these are classic Southern Alps. And if honest, that they play hard to get is part of the appeal.

The one and only, Ohau Snowfields. Photo: P.M.FaddenThanks to snowmaking expertise, local-favorite Ohau Snowfields has made a soldiering start with what some in the guiding community refer to as ‘the Brazilian’; a Snow White strip connecting top station to bottom with a swing past the Canteen for good measure.

To ski or snowboard New Zealand’s striking Southern Alps requires World Cup caliber ingenuitive humor—and rockhoppers.

That said, a long-awaited set-up storm is finally underway. A southerly winter squal developing overnight has already brought snow to valley floor elevation.
Ohau Snowfields has recorded ruffle a foot of accumulation at its top station with more on the way, as the current storm is meant to stay the next 48hrs.
