According to Variety, Netflix are working on turning the role-playing game series Persona into a live-action show. The first Persona game was released in 1996 as a spin-off from monster hunting series Shin Megami Tensei and featured a group of high-school students with the power to summon their own “personas”, dealing with a series of supernatural threats. The game spawned a number of spin-offs and sequels, including 2024’s Persona 3 Reload which is a remake of 2006’s Persona 3.

The Netflix adaptation will be executive produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood of 21 Laps, who were behind Stranger Things. Video game adaptation powerhouse Story Kitchen is also involved alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara.

Netflix’s Persona will be written by Christopher Monfette (Star Trek: Picard, Marvel’s VisionQuest) who’ll also act as showrunner. Details about plot, cast and release date are yet to be revealed.

Persona 6 is currently due to launch next year. “The iconic RPG series returns! The highly anticipated next chapter delivers a bold, new standalone story blending heartfelt daily life and new characters with pulse-pounding, supernatural adventure,” reads the description of the sequel to 2017’s Persona 5. “Whether it’s your first Persona game or you’ve been here since the beginning, this one’s for you.

“With over 30 million copies sold worldwide, the Persona series has defined a generation of RPG storytelling. Now, after years of anticipation, the next installment is finally revealed,” added developers Atlus. “Persona 6 brings everything beloved about the series into a bold new story. The signature blend of heartfelt daily life and pulse-pounding supernatural adventure returns, wrapped around a completely fresh, standalone story and new cast of characters.”
