SBT GRVL: Swenson and Villafañe Continue Dominance on the Champagne Gravel of Steamboat Springs

Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafañe took wins at SBT GRVL as the Specialized power couple keeps their rich run of form going as the first half of the gravel calendar comes to a close in Steamboat Springs.

For Swenson, it was business as usual for high altitude racing as he wrapped up his fourth SBT GRVL title with a 20-mile solo victory. That being said, the cast of characters around him was an exciting mix of veterans and younger riders who have been making huge inroads towards the top of the sport this year.

Swenson kicked away from a group of four, including Cobe Freeburn, Henry Nelson, and Adam Roberge, who was in the early move. Ultimately, Alexey Vermeulen was able to come from behind and nab second on the line, while it was a close-fought sprint for third between Freeburn and Nelson. Freeburn did just enough to grab the last step on the podium, although fourth was a massive consolation prize for Nelson, who took a huge step up with the result.

Villanfañe had a different task on her hands as she was chasing over the final paved kilometers to the line. Sarah Lange made a bold solo move late in the race, detonating the top eight riders who made the key selection over the “Wahooligan Pass” and its 14% walls 40 miles into the race. Out of the final technical section of Cow Creek, Lange had a gap that could be enough to make it the line, but over the final rolling paved section to the line, Villafañe used her solo riding ability to wind back the solo Lange.

Still, it was all to play for heading into town, and it seemed a sprint was imminent. Villafane, however, had other plans, striking out in the last kilometer and making it a second straight win on the new Specialized Crux 5, closing out a very successful opening half to the gravel season.

Nevertheless, even though the win escaped her, a solo second for Lange was a big result for the experienced gravel pro who has consistently been around the podium over the last five years, yet has not quite made the jump to the top flight. This ride, where she was consistently driving the action, was a new step for the rider from New Hampshire. Rounding out the podium, also finishing solo, was gravel national champion Lauren Stephens.
