America has no shortage of great mountain bike towns, but not all of them are created equal. While many destinations boast great trails, only a select few earn recognition from the International Mountain Bicycling Association as a designated Ride Center™, which is widely considered the highest standard for mountain biking destinations.

These towns offer exceptional trail networks, diverse riding experiences, and opportunities for riders of all abilities, from first-timers to seasoned experts. Using IMBA’s Ride Center™ designations, we’ve rounded up some of the best mountain biking towns in the United States and what makes each one worthy of a spot on every rider’s bucket list. This designation is the highest standard for mountain biking destinations. These world-class locations deliver it all, including massive variety, unmatched quality, and progression that keeps every type of rider stoked from advanced to first-timers.

The list starts with 10 towns in the Silver (World-Class) level, before going more in depth for the top seven, including the top four who earned Gold (Elite) level.

Steamboat Springs is one of Colorado’s top mountain biking hubs, often called “Bike Town USA,” with more than 500 miles of trails ranging from high alpine singletrack to mellow valley riding. The riding is split across three main zones. There is Steamboat Bike Park at the ski resort with lift accessed downhill and jump lines. Emerald Mountain, known as Howelsen Hill in winter, is adjacent to downtown and rife with classic cross country singletrack through aspens and rolling terrain. Lastly, Buffalo Pass, offers a higher elevation zone known for big views and more advanced alpine riding.

The trail network fits all ability levels. Beginners can stick to mellow bike park zones and paved paths like the Yampa River Core Trail, while intermediate riders gravitate toward Emerald Mountain’s flowy blues. Advanced riders head to technical bike park runs like Creekside and Rawhide or alpine routes such as Lupine and Morning Gloria. Popular rides include Flash of Gold on Buffalo Pass, Creekside at the resort for a technical, high-focused finish, and Spring Creek Trail for a scenic spin close to town.

Sun Valley has built one of the most complete mountain biking setups in the country, with more than 400 miles of singletrack spread across the Wood River Valley. Backed by significant investment from the Walton Family Foundation, the city offers an impressive mix of beginner-friendly flow trails, technical rock features, jump lines, pump tracks, and downhill terrain, all connected directly to downtown.

Signature riding areas include the popular Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, the extensive Slaughter Pen Trails system, and the new OZ Trails Bike Park, which just opened this year and features Arkansas’s first chairlift-served gravity trails. Beyond the city limits, Bentonville is part of the larger 500-mile OZ Trails network that spans Northwest Arkansas. Duluth has earned a reputation as one of the premier mountain biking destinations in the United States and is recognized as an IMBA Gold Level Ride Center. The city boasts more than 110 miles of purpose-built singletrack, highlighted by the 42-mile Duluth Traverse, which connects riders to five major trail systems across the city.

Perched along a ridge overlooking Lake Superior, Duluth offers a unique combination of urban convenience and rugged terrain. Trail options feature everything from smooth flow and machine-built berms to rocky technical descents, as well as lift-served downhill riding at Spirit Mountain Bike Park. Whether riders are seeking beginner-friendly progression trails, scenic cross-country routes, or challenging black-diamond terrain, Duluth delivers it all in the Midwest.

How does a small logging town in Oregon make this list? The answer is yes. Oakridge has more than 300 miles of loamy singletrack winding through the lush forests of the Willamette National Forest, which has cemented it as a destination mountain bike town. Designated as another IMBA Gold-Level Ride Center, Oakridge offers a diverse mix of riding experiences, from high-speed flow trails to rugged backcountry descents.

The area’s most famous route, the Alpine Trail, is widely regarded as one of the best mountain bike trails in the country, delivering more than 15 miles of fast, scenic riding through dense forests and mountain terrain.
