The actors were watching the USA’s group stage match against Turkey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday night (June 25) at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. Pitt was wearing a Team USA shirt and white bucket hat, while Norton was seen sporting a Radiohead T-shirt.

Turkey grabbed a last-minute winner in the game, but for many film fans, the real talking point was the unexpected reunion from David Fincher’s 1999 cult classic Fight Club.

In the film, Norton plays the unnamed narrator, a disaffected office worker suffering from insomnia, while Pitt plays the charismatic soap salesman Tyler Durden. The unforgettable twist, however, reveals that Tyler is just a projection of the narrator’s own fractured psyche, and Norton has in effect been talking to himself throughout the film.

It meant that the very sight of Norton and Pitt standing together at the World Cup led to many social media users racing to make the same gag: that Norton was “talking to himself”.

Pitt and Norton were among a star-studded crowd for the match, with Will Ferrell, Paris Hilton, Kelly Rowland, Keegan-Michael Key, Alison Brie, Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse also among those in attendance.

On the pitch, Turkey beat the USA 3-2 after a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Kaan Ayhan. The USA had already secured progression from Group D, however, and will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round Of 32 on July 1.

‘Fight Club’ initially divided critics on release but went on to become one of the defining cult films of the late ’90s. It also starred Helena Bonham Carter, Meat Loaf, Jared Leto and Holt McCallany.

Some have observed that the film anticipated the rise of so-called ‘incels’, and in 2023, Fincher argued that he is “not responsible” for how people interpret the film, and said he “can’t help” people who don’t understand that Tyler Durden is a “negative influence”.
