The finale of the Netflix phenomenon saw Eleven appear to sacrifice herself to save her friends and close the link to the Upside Down for good. However, there were inconsistencies with how she was able to do so, leaving Mike (Finn Wolfhard) to say that he believes she faked her death and is living a peaceful life in secrecy. Her fate is left open to interpretation, with many viewers speculating as to what happened to her.

Brown recently appeared at a live recording of the podcast Happy Sad Confused at 92NY in New York on Wednesday (June 24), and recalled that she was texted what really happened to her character by the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers. “They were like, ‘Do not tell anyone. Because we made it a secret kind of pledge,’” Brown said (via Variety). “No one else knows. It’s just us three. And what we do with that information, it’ll be up to them.”

Even her castmates were in the dark, and Brown joked that she was offended when her husband, Jake Bongiovi, looked at the texts she received with their verdict. “Jake was like, ‘Ooh, these are really split.’ And the whole cast thinks I’m dead,” she said. “One, rude. It’s so rude of them. There’s something to it, surely. You guys are projecting! It’s like, ‘Hey guys, we get it. You want me dead!’ But I was like, ‘Believe!’ Let’s have some hope in here.”

On a previous episode of the same podcast, The Duffer Brothers said that they may reveal the true ending for the character in 2046. Ross Duffer joked: “If we’re talking to you in 20 years about Stranger Things, [then] in 20 years. I mean, I hope so. I hope people still care [by 2046].”

Elsewhere, Brown’s on-screen father, David Harbour, said they “still adore each other” after reports of a rift between them during filming.
