Netflix has announced plans to launch a new interactive horror game experience, starring Sadie Sink, Zoë Kravitz and Troy Baker.

Unhinged will be released exclusively to Netflix subscribers on June 30. The immersive game experience puts you in the center of a “thriller-turned-horror story” that can be played using your mobile phone as a controller.

The game focuses on Ava (voiced by Zoë Kravitz) who is trapped inside her apartment building by a Category 5 Hurricane. Her only link to the outside world is a call from her best friend Claire (Sadie Sink).

“But the true terror is inside,” explains a blog post from Netflix. “A suffocating uneasiness transforms her sanctuary into a hostile prison. The building’s stairwell is locked shut, blocking her only escape, and a wellness check on a neighbour reveals unsettling signs of life, but no answer. Finally, a spine-chilling realization sets in: Ava is no longer alone.

“What begins as a terrifying blackout in a raging storm spirals into a mind-bending thriller. With only your phone to guide you, this is a story of unpredictable turns.”

Unhinged will be available via Netflix games. You control Ava by moving your mobile phone in the physical world, with the game character copying your every motion. “The immersion goes a step further with audio. When Ava receives a call or text, your actual phone rings, vibrates, and plays the audio directly through its speaker, while the rest of the environmental sound effects boom through your TV,” say Netflix.

The soundtrack was created by award-winning composer Jason Hill (Mindhunter, Gone Girl) and Ren Klyce (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) contributed to the sound design.

There are two difficulty settings with Unhinged. Story Mode lets you play through the spooky narrative without the risk of game over, while Standard features several “high stakes” moments that force you to race across the clock to survive. It should take you “the same amount of time you’d need to watch an episode of your favourite show” to complete Unhinged. 

Last year, Netflix removed the popular interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch alongside other interactive specials from Bear Grylls and Kimmy Schmidt. Earlier this month, the streamer launched a brand new FIFA game.

In other news the ‘Sonic Live In Concert’ tour, celebrating 35 years of the blue hedgehog, has been extended.
