Brayden Burries selected by Milwaukee Bucks with No. 10 pick in 2026 NBA Draft

The Athletic has live coverage of the 2026 NBA Draft.

The Milwaukee Bucks selected Brayden Burries with the No. 10 pick on Tuesday in the NBA Draft. Burries averaged 16.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his lone season at Arizona.

Burries brings a strong blend of shooting and ballhandling. Defenders have to stay honest on him because of how comfortable and confident he is pulling up from a variety of spots on the court. He can also get downhill and score at the rim because of how strong he is. When he was younger, driving was the main part of his skill set, but he has rounded his game to become one of the best three-level scorers in his age group while also playing at his own pace. Goes in straight lines toward the rim as a driver and with his gathers. There are no rounded angles here; he’s trying to get downhill and go through bodies where he can with sharp footwork.

He’s not a high-level passer or playmaker, and he has not proven that he sees many advanced reads. At just under 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Burries isn’t a selfish player and will look for his teammates but he hasn’t shown a lot yet in terms of vision or seeing the entire court on his drives. He is very much a scoring-minded player and has struggled with turnovers at the AAU level, where he posted a negative assist-to-turnover ratio with 58 assists to 59 turnovers.

Why Brayden Burries is built for the modern NBA

Here’s why Braden Burry fits the modern NBA perfectly with his skill set. Burry is a 6’4 guard who came in at 215 pounds at the combine. It was easy to see that strength on display at Arizona. He’s a compact physical guard who’s constantly aggressive, trying to push the ball in transition while also being a real. Three-level scorer. He averaged 16 points a game to lead the Wildcats to the Final Four this year while averaging 49% from the field and nearly 40% from 3. On top of that, Burry is a tough on-ball defender who can hold his line one on one while making quick decisions in scramble situations. Here’s why Burry just plays a very efficient game that will translate nicely to the NBA. In the first one here, you’ll see Burry’s reject the ball screen is the Kansas State. The defender overplays him. He’ll drive to the rim and finish over the top with a nice righty floater. Then the next time down, instead of rejecting the screen, he goes around it, feels his defender go under the screen and just rise the fire from 3 against the drop coverage defense. He can play intelligently off of the ball as he shows here, relocating from the wing to the corner as he feels this man help up on the Ivan Karchenkov ball screen drive, confidently drilling a 3. And then if you play up on him to contest the 3, he can also hit Tunde Yufu with a little inside-out dribble to the left, open up the angle, drive and finish with his left all the way at the rim. Imagine something on the spectrum of a Nikilil Alexander Walker to a Derrick White, something along those lines as a comparison point. Two players who have impacted winning teams for multiple years now.”,”ineligibleRegion”:[“BI”,”BY”,”CD”,”CF”,”CU”,”IQ”,”IR”,”KP”,”LB”,”LY”,”ML”,”NI”,”RU”,”SD”,”SO”,”SS”,”SY”,”UA”,”VE”,”YE”,”ZW”],”publisher”:{“@type”:”NewsMediaOrganization”,”@id”:”https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/#publisher”,”name”:”The Athletic”,”url”:”https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/”,”foundingDate”:”2016-01-25″,”logo”:{“@type”:”ImageObject”,”@id”:”https://theathletic.com/app/themes/athletic/assets/img/the-athletic-wordmark-black.png”,”url”:”https://theathletic.com/app/themes/athletic/assets/img/the-athletic-wordmark-black.png”,”contentUrl”:”https://theathletic.com/app/themes/athletic/assets/img/the-athletic-wordmark-black.png”,”creditText”:”The Athletic”,”height”:”60″,”width”:”435″},”publishingPrinciples”:”https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/edit-guidelines/”,”sameAs”:”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Athletic”},”author”:[{“@type”:”Person”,”name”:”Sam Vecenie”}]}

It’s hard for me to see how Burries won’t be a successful NBA player, at least in some regard. He’s a terrific two-way threat who can pressure the defense from all three levels as a scorer, thanks to his jumper and footwork. Defensively, he’s a hard-nosed, on-ball player who stays engaged off the ball and makes action plays happen with disruptive hands. I loved the way he fit into what Arizona did this season, not only as the team’s primary scoring threat but also as part of what made it a great defensive team.

{“endpoint”:”https://api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com/graphql”}

Yet, I could understand if rebuilding teams aren’t wildly enthusiastic about Burries. He strikes me more as an elite complementary player than one who will turn into a star. He can average 20 points while playing high-level defense, but for him to turn into an All-Star, we’d need to see growth as a passer and playmaker, as well as development with how he separates from his opposition.

John Hollinger’s analysis

When a freshman guard shoots 57.1 percent on 2s in the Big 12, you take notice. When he does it while shooting 39.1 percent from 3, rebounding like a power forward and playing solid defense for one of the best teams in the country … yeah, that’s elite stuff. Burries would be a top-five pick on my board in a lot of years, but the strength of this year’s class pushes him to eighth.

Burries doesn’t quite profile as a lead guard, but he can shoot and get to the cup, especially in transition. He loves taking his own rebounds and pushing them down the court, and he loves shooting pull-up 3s at the end of those forays. His finishing can be very right-handed, but he attacks from either side on his push.

Oddly, Burries’ overall 3-point volume was pretty low in an Arizona system that was basically allergic to 3-pointers (Arizona was 363rd out of 365 Division I schools in 3-point attempt frequency). However, he shot 80.5 percent from the line, and his stroke looked pure when I watched him pregame the two times I saw Arizona in person.

David Aldridge’s draft confidential

Eastern Conference executive No. 1: Burries is a three-level scorer. And he’s a fundamentally sound guy. At 6-4, when you’re more of an off-ball guard, you become a little less unique. But he’s built for today’s NBA because he’s so physically strong, and he’s smart, and he’s efficient with the way he plays. He’s very compact. He’s a very good closeout attacker. And the shooting was a big swing skill coming in (to Arizona). He wasn’t known as a reliable 3-point shooter, but he showed this year he has a shot that commands respect. Good at getting to the foul line. He can draw contact, maintain body control. He can guard, run second-side pick-and-roll. He’s more of a fundamentally sound combo guard.

College basketball assistant coach (his team played Arizona): Great size, super physical. Great body. Elite in transition and the open space. That’s what we tried to focus on with him, keep him in the half court, where we thought he was just a little more indecisive. Doesn’t do anything great, but he’s got good size, good disposition, he’ll try to guard. Surprised he’s up as high as I’ve seen him, but he must be working out well or measuring well.
