BYD plots further expansion with new Shark plug-in hybrid pick-up

BYD is planning to expand its lineup further with the introduction of the new Shark plug-in hybrid pick-up in the UK.
It’s making its European debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, held between July 9 and 12, and is one of eight new models from the BYD Group appearing at the event.
Though the Shark is already on sale in markets such as Australia and Mexico, this will be its first outing in Europe. BYD is aiming squarely at the Ford Ranger with its plug-in hybrid powertrain made up of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and twin electric motors. It has a combined 429bhp and BYD says it can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds.
A 30kWh battery is almost triple the size of that in the Ford Ranger PHEV, giving it a claimed electric driving range of 55 miles. A 2.5-tonne towing capacity is also promised, though that’s a tonne beneath the Ranger’s rated towing capability.
The Shark is one of a number of new electrified pick-ups launching in the UK, with EV choices now including the KGM Musso EV (which uses a BYD powertrain), Maxus eTerron 9 and the new Toyota Hilux BEV.
Also on BYD’s stand at the Festival of Speed will be the firm’s premium brand Denza’s new ‘Z Coupe’ electric supercar, which is making its world debut at the event. It follows on from the reveal of the Denza Z Spider earlier in the year at the Beijing motor show.
Goodwood will also mark Denza’s official launch in the UK, initially with the Z9GT shooting brake, but it will be followed up quickly with the D9 DM-i hybrid MPV and Land Rover Defender-esque BAO 5 4×4.
BYD’s luxury firm Yangwang will also be showing its U9 Extreme hypercar in the UK for the first time, which is noteworthy as being the world’s fastest road car with a 308.4mph top speed. Yangwang will also be rolling out its U8 SUV again alongside its U7 saloon car, available with both electric and plug-in hybrid power.
Other noteworthy things to look out for at the Festival of Speed include the first appearance of the electric Alpine A110 successor in mule form, while the Renault 5 Turbo 3E will also be making its way up the legendary hillclimb for the first time.
